Irvine, Calif., May Be Next to Ban Plastic Bags

City Council to consider proposal to investigate on Tuesday.

Mayor Sukhee Kang wants Irvine to help reduce the "harmful impacts of widespread use of plastic grocery shopping bags."

That could mean banning the one-time use bags, as Laguna Beach, Dana Point, Long Beach, Los Angeles and other California cities already have done.

Irvine City Council on Tuesday will take up the mayor's proposal to direct city staff to "thoroughly examine" the issue, research the measures other cities are using and provide the council some policy options. He also wants to look at the use of Styrofoam products.
