Brickbat: Reading Is Fundamental

Universal PicturesUniversal PicturesIn Florida, the Hernando School Board unanimously voted last year to end the recognition of valedictorian and salutatorian in graduating high school classes. But they have only now realized that they did that. The school system's superintendent says he also just realized what they had done. The problem occurred when the board voted to accept a staff proposal to recognize top graduates with cum laude and summa cum laude honors. No one realized the proposal also included ending recognition of valedictorian and salutatorian. Several school board members say they will bring back those honors.

    This is much better than eliminating it on purpose because 'everyone's a valedictorian'.

    Too big to fail.

    No, instead of a 0 it's just 2.0, 2.0 is the new baseline, but they'll report it like it's the normal 2.0.

  • UnCivilServant||

    Oh, so that's where the saludavictorians come from. they're the ones who got 2.0 while the valedictorians got the 4.0. Silly me, I forgot they had to have two classes of awards for tradition's sake.

    Hopefully it fell under the zero tolerance rule and the valedictorian and salutatorian students were suspended and their diplomas withheld.

    In order to receive your high school diploma, you should be required to read aloud, flawlessly, at the graduation ceremony a randomly-presented paragraph from, say, the current WSJ.
