Disaster Area

The new issue of The Independent Review is well-timed, with two articles on natural disasters and public policy:

  • William F. Shughart II has a paper making the case for private rather than state-driven disaster relief.
  • Emily Chamlee-Wright reviews a recent book with an Austro-libertarian take on New Orleans' recovery from Katrina.

That's anarchism! Why, people helping themselves! What would you have next, a free market?

Pish posh! Balderdash and Jabberwocky!

Just ask Tony, or Neu Mejican: We need "stable infrastructures"! (Whatever the FUCK that is....)

No need to have a whole Austro-libertarian analysis. Here's what happened in a nutshell:

Government fucked up.
So, government fucked up again, and then, government fucked up some more by not allowing regular people to help others ("T'is our tuuuuurrrfffff, bitches!!!!")

THAT'S what happened.

I'm going to go out on my favorite limb and say New Orleans would be in much better shape right now if the government and their pet "stakeholder advocates" had just stayed the fuck out of the way and allowed private property interests to prevail.
