Phelps Back In Action

Michael Phelps...remember him?

He's almost 24 and has seven world records. This guy won more medals than any other Olympian (16) and half of those at a single Olympics, which is a record that hadn't been broken since 1972. He was the Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year. He was the spokesman for Rosetta Stone. He was on the Wheeties box!  He was snapped taking a bong hit at a party. Then he was suspended from competitive swimming for three months.

Now he's back!

Here's what Phelps said at the practice pool yesterday:

"It was a stupid mistake that I made....But I'll have what I've accomplished in and out of the pool for the rest of my life. I'm satisfied with what I've done and happy with what I've done."

In case you missed Radley Balko's post, here's what Phelps should have said when the picture first surfaced:

Dear America,

I take it back. I don't apologize.

Because you know what? It's none of your goddamned business....If during my brief window of down time I want to relax, enjoy myself, and partake of a substance that's a hell of a lot less bad for me than alcohol, tobacco, or, frankly, most of the prescription drugs most of you are taking, well, you can spare me the lecture.

    Clearly smoking marijuana destroys your body and takes away any motivation to do anything productive. Michael Phelps is proof.

    You never want to be the celbrity who tells or shows the truth behind the hypocrisy. Phelps, probably the most fit man in the world, smoking marijuana puts lie to the entire line of bullshit about marijuana; its bad for you, it leads to harder drug use, it is addictive and so forth. Like the Miss California who said that she didn't agree with gay marriage, just like the majority of the country including the President, Phelps must now be destroyed.

    Heaven forbid that someone make a decision the masses disagree with. My God! He's 24 and smoked some pot. I mean, damn! He's already accomplished more in his life than most people ever will, and the rank and file in this country want to judge him?

    That's pathetic.

    It was a stupid mistake that I made.

    If "It" means "smoking pot with a bunch of strangers that I didn't know and shouldn't have trusted", I agree. He's a celebrity, and a therefore a target, and should have known better.

    If "It" means "smoking pot", then he's a pussy.

    Ross Rebagliati proved that weed and sports go together like a horse and carriage.

    Yes, Robert 'The Chief' Parrish proved the amazing compatibility of high-level sports achievement with the 'good herb', but Mr. Rebagliati was a first to challenge that 'no-siree' is it a performance-enhancing 'drug'. Au contraire, mon frere, it can be a life-enhancing supplement for not just a few folks out there.

    a stupid mistake that I made was to sell my soul to the IOC and USOC.

    This reminds me- I need to grab a big box of Special K at the grocery store.

    Michael Phelps can kiss my ass.

  • jester||

    Yes, Michael Phelps has outstripped (pun intended? Please vote NOW!)Greg Louganis as the most successful homosexual Olympian.

    You go, girl!

  • ||

    "Michael Phelps can kiss my ass."

    Get off his ass. It is easy for you to say that Phelps should give up millions in endorsements in order to be a martyr for the anti-drug war cause. It is not your money. Of course he is lying and faking contrition. If he doesn't, he stands to lose millions. I would do the same thing.

    Torture? Give 'em a pass, let's not "look backward." Bong hits? Throw the book at 'em. What a nutty culture we have.

  • zoltan||

    I'd give up millions if it meant not having cops beat down people's doors and kill innocent people, among other things. But I also don't care about cars, iPods, and banging hotties either. I have simple tastes...

  • Medic001||

    Thank you Zoltan. The needs of the many should out weight the few.

    And why isn't Phelps in jail if smoking cannibus if it is sooooooooo evil and bad for you...?

  • Xeones Wannabe||

    Yo, fuck Michael Phelps.
    No wait...umm...umm...am I doing this right?

  • zoltan||

    "Thank you Zoltan. The needs of the many should out weight the few."

    Not by any government action, and depending on what needs. Depends on the situation, Spock. SLD.
