Historian David Beito, co-author of the extraordinary new book Black Maverick: T.R.M. Howard's Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power, has posted footage of Howard discussing some of his efforts to combat Mississippi's racist white Citizens Councils in 1955. As I noted in my review of Black Maverick, Howard was an outspoken champion of mutual aid, civil rights, private property, and armed self-defense. A massively successful doctor and entrepreneur, he poured much of his wealth and talent into the fight for racial equality and African American economic independence.
