A lost tribe of
dirty Welsh hippies (no, not reason's noble leader and
his family—that's Welch) become honorary members of the Leave Us
Alone Coalition:
For five happy years they enjoyed simple lives in their straw and mud huts. Generating their own power and growing their own food, they strived for self-sufficiency and thrived in homes that looked more suited to the hobbits from The Lord of the Rings. Then a survey plane chanced upon the 'lost tribe'... and they were plunged into a decade-long battle with officialdom....When the pilot reported back, officials were unable to find any records, let alone planning permission, for the mystery hillside village surrounded by trees and bushes....Yesterday that fight, backed by more modern support for green issues, ended in victory.
Hilariously, the mud hut dwellers had to provide some sort of environmental impact statement as the final step before finally being left alone:
'We had to prove we were improving the biodiversity of the area and conserving the woodland and we did that."

It seems not so much "won" but rather the gov't decided to leave
them alone.
I guess that does count for a "win" these days.
Good on them.
'We had to prove we were improving the biodiversity of the area
and conserving the woodland and we did that.'
Oh, man I wish I could have written this up for them.
Prior to the occupation of the subject property, species homo
sapiens was not present. Post-construction, several breeding pairs
of homo sapiens will be present. There are no other projected
changes to the biodiversity of the area. Net impact: positive.
joe,
I'm thinking they should've shown the authorities an episode of
Grizzly Adams.
look at that exposed devegetated ground!!!
I want to see a stormwater management plan and I want to see it
now!
Think of the wetlands people...the wetlands!

Pro Lib,
My McNair side is getting agitated. Wales and Scotland are full of
swamps and pine forest. Can't speak for England itself.
Good for them. But it is sad to note that it takes a 10 year battle with nightmare bureaucracy for people to be allowed to live in the 8th century in Britain.
"The kids watch DVDs and we run a business from the farm."
I guess that person didn't see the irony in that statement.
"Oh, you're upset that Jenny Agutter's never gone on an aboriginal walkabout with you?"

I like it. You did neglect to mention the inceased habitat for
Rattus norvegicus, Pthirus pubis and Pediculus
humanus. Those are probably good things to omit though.
I guess it's good for people to have the freedom to live in the
manner that they wish, as long as their lifestyle doesn't
contradict the dogma of free-market capitalists. Then they should
be subjected to ridicule.
Enjoy irrelevance boys, it's all yours.
Wow, if you think that this is us making fun of them, Anonymous,
you must not come around here much.
Or you're a douche-tard.
Is today Pop Culture Day or something?
It figures you would show up on a Welsh thread, "someone". I
thought you were going to change to Bruce?
Hmmmm . . . for some reason I have "Safety Dance" playing in my head now.
Seconded. And I'm picturing Fry doing the stupid finger pointing dance to it in his '80s power suit.
"Now this is the life: watching apes mangle each other near
celebrities."
"In my day we went to coke parties, but the principle's the
same."

It's their land. It's their lifestyle choice. I'd expect most
libertarians respect that.
OTOH, I'm free to ridicule anybody I deem deserving of it. That
includes, but is hardly limited to golfers, back to the land
hippies and those guys wearing sagging pants.
Any questions about the philosophy?
My god! What have I started?
What you always do. Turn death into a fighting chance to
survive.

J sub D, I suggest we go easy on this poor bastard. He actually
believed he had a point. Just let him smoke his hobbit weed in
peace thinking he had some magnificent insight on the libertarian
mindset in which he hoisted us
and some liberals who were having some fun on.

What have you done? Those loose

know?
This is actually just another battle between haughty cityfolk and back-country bumpkins. The cityfolk chop down all the woods and replace them with meticulously planned cities, and then get all upset when the nomads and natives want to pitch camp outside the city limits. The cityfolk won, so now the only way to live outside the system is to live in an eco village while pandering to environmentalists or get kicked around and abused like the tinkers. Even this whole idea of rigid property rights is a city-folk idea.
Well it took ten years for the Welsh hobbits to get the right to live an 8th Century lifestyle but how long did it take for the Muslims to get legal recognition of sharia law (a legal code best suited for the eighth century as well)?
I recall being right once when the Trivial Pursuit card was wrong. Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of a Sloar that day, I can tell you!
Are they busy growing vowels? Wales is clearly in need of
them.

Vowels are very common in Wales, at least in spoken language. You'd
be better to complain about semitic languages like hebrew. They
don't even bother to spell out their vowels. At least they use y in
Wales.
Actually, the government promised to give them their permit, but then they...you know...
