March 8, 2007
Nick
Gillespie, Jesse Walker, Radley Balko, Kerry Howley, Dave Weigel,
Katherine Mangu-Ward, and Ron Bailey invite you to come and
celebrate the publication of Reason's April issue on Thursday, March 8,
at 6.30pm at the upstairs bar at Dragonfly (1215 Connecticut Avenue
NW).
We'll also raise a glass in absentia to Reason Senior Editor Brian Doherty, whose new book, Radicals for Capitalism: A Free-Wheeling History of the Modern Libertarian Movement, is drawing rave reviews from the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and others.
We'll be giving out Reason stickers, randomly sized T-shirts (to the first 15 folks to show up), and copies of the April issue, which features rollicking stories such as:
"Be Afraid of President McCain: The frightening mind of an authoritarian maverick";
"It's Our Job To Stop That Dream: The endless futile work of the Border Patrol";
"Bums: An illustrated guide to homelessness"; and
"Florida's Forgotten Rebels: Rediscovering the most successful slave revolt in American history."
See you on Thursday.
If you would like to be added to an Evite list for D.C.-area events, please send an email to events@reason.com.
And in the meantime, why not subscribe already? For less than $20 a year, you'll get America's only magazine of "Free Minds and Free Markets" delivered right to your door.

Hey cutie...I mean smartie...you know that some of us are already subscribers, right? And some of us subscribers don't live near DC. So how 'bout sending your subscribers a Reason sticker? Many of us would put them on our cars, thus increasing the visibility of your most outstanding publication.
Joy! Another opportunity to gripe about how uninteresting the
Reason Stuff is! Can't get Bagge or Stantis or somebody to do a
t-shirt design that might actually say something more than "I have
an unhealthy preoccupation with a boring political magazine that
has the pretension to not uppercase its first letter"?
Thanks for the opening.
I will make the sacrafice to cross the river into the People's Republic of DC and make an exception to my embargo of places that dictate smoking rules even though there are PLENTY of good places over here in VA . . .
Any chance of having at least one Reason event on the other side
of the Potomac? It's not like Arlington or Alexandria are short on
places to meet.
I still think that Reason events need to start taking place down in
Mannassas Park, even if it has to be a 'dry' night.
Would not a more appropriate phrase for the "national greatness conservatism" that McCaine, Kristol, and others advocate be "national social conservatism"? Or how about just "fascism"?
"Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology and mass
movement that seeks to place the nation, defined in exclusive
biological, cultural, and historical terms, above all other
loyalties, and to create a mobilized national community.[1] Many
different characteristics are attributed to fascism by different
scholars, but the following elements are usually seen as its
integral parts: nationalism, authoritarianism, militarism,
corporatism, totalitarianism, collectivism[2], anti-liberalism, and
anti-communism." - Wikipedia
I have no reason to believe John McCain defines the nation in
biological terms, and "totalitarian" clearly goes too far.
On the other hand, the "mobilized national community" bit - that's
pretty darn close the "great national project" thing the Weekly
Standard is always harping on.
No, no, that's not right.
I am in Colorado so I don't expect to make it to a party in DC, but started reading the new mag last night and it looks pretty fun so far.
I don't go to meetings where I'm not trusted to concealed
carry.
If it is concealed who is to know? They did not pat me down when I
went in November (I think). If you give them the right stern look,
they will trust you too:)
The issue is that they are having it in a city that does not
"allow" CC, or restricts it to a bizarre level.
If they had it in VA you would not be legal to carry concealed, but
you can carry open until the management asks you to leave.
BTW, is it okay if I bring a date if I can find one? It did not
looke like there were many daters the last time and a serious lack
of hot chicks. No, the chicks were hot, just not enough of
them.
I would be more likely to subscribe if you dropped the "free minds" nonsense from the slogan. Minds that deify the market are no freer than minds that deify the workers or the fatherland. You libertarians have a deterministic stalinist mindset that has simply attached itself to Milton Friedman.
BJ,
Your point is well taken, but the reason markets are so valuable to
libertarians is because markets are made up of numerous individual
choices, whereas a centrally planned economy is made up of a few
centralized choices implemented by force.
Lamar,
China is busy proving that the free market and totalitarianism are
far from incompatible.
alls,
I personally support 'free minds.' And free stuff. Any magazine
that combines an illustrated tutorial on bums and a hit piece on
McCain's penchant for being, uh, himself is a okay in my
book.
Guy, as a fellow resident of the Commonwealth, I would suggest to
the folks that make the decisions that the Continental in Rosslyn
is far from a bad place - one stop over The River, lots of pool
tables and ashtrays aplenty.
I'll do my best to make it over.
V
Vincente,
You actually like the Continental? I liked it fine when it was The
Pawn Shop, but I stopped in once last summer and it was not all
that impressive.
Perhaps is is better in months with an R :)
"China is busy proving that the free market and
totalitarianism are far from incompatible."
Just remove the word "free" from this sentence, and it would be a
correct assertion.
Mrs TWC is in DC and will likely show up for this shindig. You guys be nice to her. Unfortunately, she'll be arriving late due to a conflicting, pre-existing commitment.

Is she hot?
I'll slap my own face for that.
Ow! Bad highnumber!
Is she hot?
When I was younger and single I learned that if you tell your
friends and roomies that the girl you're dating is hot they will
immediately expect to see a 10. Once they meet your new chick, they
will say the same thing every time I thought you said she was
hot? She's not that great. You said she was a knockout? Well, she's
okay...., that chick's no 8 or 9, more like a 6....
But if you tell them the new chick is just okay looking, then,
everything changes. Wow, man, she's hot, what a fox (dating
myself with that one), why didn't you tell us she was that cute?
Dude, she's at least an 8.5, she got a sister?
Now don't be buying her a bunch of drinks now.
I always enjoy Matt Welch articles. Could you possibly find a more evil pic of McCain? I'm no McCain fan but that pic is "editorial".
Now don't be buying her a bunch of drinks now.
No worries. I'm nowhere near DC. I have this knee jerk response
that whenever anyone mentions a female loved one or is telling an
anecdote and mentions a female, I ask if she's hot. Kind of an
inside joke that only I get.
But I can tell from your response that your wife is like "Playmate"
hot. Good for you.

We've been married 23 years and I still think she's hot, I guess
that's what counts. Man, she's gonna kick my butt if she sees
this.
Mrs TWC in Hawaii last June.

Well, yes. And Reason is a magazine of opinion.
Of course, having the meeting today on International
Women's Day may contain some irony.
Or how libertarians actually can achieve many of the goals of this
day!
Without resorting to socialism, of course....
I am trying to decide, black cowboy hat or no cowboy hat?
Seeing the next story "Doherty on Libertarianism's Biggest
Enemy(ies)" has me confused and disturbed.
I am trying to decide, assless leather chaps or rubber
pantaloons?
I think you are looking for the New York
meeting.
Sandy, drink, it helps the pain.
BTW, the first two stories on your website are hilarious. But I
gotta go with the dead clowns.
It helps the pain, but stuffs the nose, which causes more pain,
and then it reacts with the antibiotics, and your liver is even
less happy with you than usual.
Thanks for the kind words.
I'll be at the next one, I promise. Just you guys quit holding them
on my birthday and company events.
