"Christian Defense Coalition Calls for the Senate to Block Passage of the Patriot Act Renewal," according to a press release from the Christian Wire Service. CDC director Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney declares,
It is our hope that the Senate will block passage of the renewal of the Patriot Act and craft legislation that will more carefully protect and safeguard civil liberties and the First Amendment. Sadly with the passage of the Patriot Act, a climate and culture has been created in which 'national security' has become more important than protecting civil liberties. The result has been the First Amendment has become the 'second victim' of 9/11 and the rights of peaceful demonstrators trampled.
Amen Brother. Amen.

I was delighted and blown away this morning when I opened the
paper and read that my very Republican representative (John
Sweeney, 20th district of NY)
voted against the PATRIOT Act. Unfortunately, his objection
wasn't on civil liberties grounds. His argument was that he
wouldn't vote for the PAT Act again until the funding formula for
homeland security was revised so that rural/low-risk area funding
was reduced. And his district is entirely rural/suburban and
low-risk:
"We've wasted tens of billions of dollars and we cannot
continue to do this," said Sweeney. "It's a fundamental issue of
the culture of Congress and whether we're willing to be
adults."
I've been hoping rightwing paranoia about government would make a comeback. Seemed to go away after 2000 for some mysterious reason.
