A Frothy Mixture of Campaign Finance Law and Censorship

No surprise that Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) is fond of censorship, but he's apparently expanding his horizons by using campaign finance law to go after a Scranton newspaper he's charged with making a "corporate contribution" to his opponent. Overlawyered has a good roundup of the coverage, including a NY Post column by erstwhile Reasonite Ryan Sager.

The only thing keeping my blood pressure down is the knowledge that Santorum will be gone after the election in 2006. Bob Casey will clean his clock.

The question is, how much damage can he do in the meantime?

I cannot tell you how much it makes me laugh that every Santorum-related post now begins with "Frothy Mixture." The "rule" should be permanently enshrined in Reason's editing guidelines.

Growing up in Chicago, I didn't think there were any locales in the country that had dirtier and more corrupt politicians. Pennsylvania seems to be making a run for the title. Wasn't Casey's father the governor that helped kill R. Budd Dwyer?

Actually, I'll kind of miss not having Santorum to kick around any more. You couldn't hire such an entertaining buffoon at any price.

Until the Supremes upheld McCain-Feingold, I would've laughed at the idea of this kind of lawsuit. Now, who knows? Maybe John Roberts will save us.
