In an excerpt from a forthcoming book, sociologist Pablo Boczkowski explores how online adjuncts to traditional newspapers have been transforming the concept of news. Notably, "The news moves from being mostly journalist-centered, communicated as a monologue, and primarily local, to also being increasingly audience-centered, part of multiple conversations, and micro-local." More darkly, at least for those of us with the traditional church-and-state view of how the business staff should relate to the newsroom, advertising personnel are aquiring more influence on what gets covered.

This is strictly from the outside of the biz, but it seems a bit naive to hold a Church and State theory of the newsroom.

In a world where the Church paid government salaries, a policy of separation would be farcical.

Well, naive or not, there was a longstanding and pretty robust norm about that at mainline news orgs for a long time--doubtless not completely effective everywhere all the time, but at least judging by the reports of veteran journos, it was taken pretty seriously. I'd like to believe it's in the long term interest of news orgs to have the credibity of public confidence in a certain separation there... I hope it is, anyway.
