    Alternate caption: "Look! Five million new jobs!"

  • Mike in PA||

    How about, "Oh crap. Well, let's tell em we saved the roots."

  • Tricky Prickears||

    As long as the roots are not severed...

  • Nancy Pelosi||

    Looks like 500 million to me!

    This cartoon is fundamentally flawed in its symbolic representations.

    If the manure (or bullshit) is Obama's use of the stimulus money would grow the economy, I don't understand what's going on. In the context of the cartoon, the money/manure is not growing the plant/economy, so what would be the use of the Uncle Sam/taxpayers opening up his wallet on the plane/economy? If manure=money, then what does the Uncle Sam/taxpayer have in his wallet? Manure? That doesn't make any sense. If the plant/economy is supposed to grow in the money/manure, how does dumping money/money help a plant to grow?

    If the stimulus/manure is Obama's hype or promotion of the stimulus and not the stimulus itself, the cartoon still doesn't make any sense, because money has already been spent (or set aside/assign/promised.) The Uncle Sam/taxpayer has already opened his wallet and dumped money all over the economy/plant to little effect. Even if it's about dumping more money on the plant/economy, then the cartoon should indicate that it's about more money for a failed project. (That would be represented by the Uncle Sam/taxpayer being exhorted to pour more manure/money, not money/money in a "wallet.") The plant/economy symbolism being encouraged to grow with inked high cotton rag paper doesn't make symbolic sense at all.

    Looks like everybody beat me to the jobs punchline :)

  • Suki||

    SugarFree,

    LOL! Heart it, you have the funniest long winded analysis style here.

  • ..||

    Brevity is the soul of wit.

  • ||

    Commonplaces are the crutches of someone who can't think of anything else to say.

  • ||

    hey Suki!

  • Xeones||

    Stantis swings, and misses so hard that it's almost the opposite of funny.

    Hey Two Thirds Ellipsis, if reading the comments of others causes you so much suffering, why do you keep coming back?

  • ||

    Yo, fuck uppity punctuation.

  • ||

    If manure=money, then what does the Uncle Sam/taxpayer have in his wallet? Manure?

    Yes. Is that really so outlandish?

  • PantsFan||

  • ||

    OT

    Jezebel Michael Jackson thread comment:

    "Where are the photos of when he used to be Black?"

    Shitstorm ensues.

  • ||

    See, the joke would have worked better if the bags would have been treasury money bags instead of manure bags. Trying to slide the manure angle in there was one too many metaphors for humor to bear. Got to make those jokes a little tighter, Scott.

  • ||

    Is that really so outlandish?

    So you keep manure in your wallet? Does anyone else take it as legal tender other than the Tractor Supply Company? 8^)

  • ||

    domo,

    You are still expected to believe that plants grow in money. A humorous reversal of the "money doesn't grow on trees" trope, perhaps, but it still fails as a symbolic representation.

  • ||

    *Bugs Bunny voice*

    It stinks.

  • ||

    You are still expected to believe that plants grow in money.

    I guess I was willing to accept the "economy as money tree" image more readily than "cash as manure." It still wouldn't have been highlarious, but it would have made sense without requiring detailed analysis.

  • ||

    OK, I want to keep going, but I've got to rescue a baby bird and then go to a (OMG boring) meeting. Back in two hours, tops.

  • ||

    McDonalds are commemorating Michael Jackson with the McJacko, a piece of 50 year old albino meat between two 8 year old buns

  • ||

    Target and Walmart running a MJ appreciation sale:

    "Little boys pants - half off"

  • ||

    farah fawcett went to heaven yesterday and was granted a wish...she said she wanted for all the children in the world to be healthy and safe so God killed Michael Jackson

  • ||

    Michael Jackson's dying wish was to be recycled into plastic bags, so he can still be a danger to small children.

  • ||

    SugarFree, good morning reading over there at jezebel. I think the people who are so broken up over the death of michael jackson to the point you would think someone in their own family had died need to seriously take stock of their own lives.

  • ||

  • Cabeza de Vaca||

    Early reports say Michael Jackson's funeral will be held at noon. That's when the little hand touches the big hand.

  • ||

    Maybe they should try putting Michael Jackson's decomposing carcass in the flower pot.

  • BakedPenguin||

    P Brooks, with that much plastic, the recycling plant would be better.

  • ||

    Oh for the love of Bubbles. Are we going to turn every thread into kick the dead Jackson today?

    Stantis scores with this one. Genuinely amusing, highly relevant, mildly original.

  • BakedPenguin||

    Ah, crap, I thought this was the MJ thread, and didn't get P Brooks' joke.

  • ||

    Are we going to turn every thread into kick the dead Jackson today?

    I certainly hope so.

  • ||

    this is just confusing.

    The stimulus was bullshit?

    With that much fertilizer for such a small pot, it's gonna burn up the growth.

    If you let it compost for a while. it will cause mega-growth in whatever you add to it.

    I kinda helps if you take it out of the bags. it won't work otherwise.

    Hell, I don't know.

  • Xeones||

    Hell, I don't know.

    Yeah, the more you know about gardening, the less sense the cartoon makes.

  • ||

    If manure=money, then what does the Uncle Sam/taxpayer have in his wallet? Manure?

    Given the inexorable and accelerating decline of the dollar, I would say yes.

  • ||

    c'mon doesn't anyone else have any good MJ jokes? Trying to make the funnies thread funny somehow...

  • ||

    The stimulus bags were full of money (not manure). But the economy is an organic, living thing (represented by a plant). Money cannot nourish such a living thing. Instead of learning this lesson, they think they need to add more of the "fertilizer" that has no possible chance to help the plant grow.

  • ||

    Jockeys at Belmont are going to wear black armbands out of respect for Michael Jackson who successfully rode more 3 year olds than anyone in living memory.

  • ||

    Confirmation of Michael Jackson's death have come through - he died of food poisoning - he ate 12yr old nuts

  • ||

    Good Lord, there are more comments/criticisms for the cartoons than for the articles.

    Wait, I know. Obama should have said "Why don't you try pooping on it?"

    Course, the only one that finds me funny is my 11 year old.

  • Fascitis Necrotizante||

    I heard it was an eight year old wiener.

  • Ska||

    Domo, I appreciate your thread saving tactics.

    Michelle Obama should be standing in the background yelling and looking crazy. Maybe there could be a scene where she tries to nurture the plant but accidentally kills it a la the guy from of mice and men, Lenny? Also, Uncle Sam should be thinner. And he should have a dog on a leash, and the dog is very thin and sickly and the dog is labeled 'the dollar' and there should be Jackson's ghost floating to heaven, saying 'Obama you spend money like I did!' and the two little Obama girls are like "Daddy did you buy us a theme park?" and Obama is like, hmmm the gov't will take Jackson's mansion, estate laws be damned!' Alas Poor Joshua! Also, I realize this was probably printed before Jackson died, but it should have been modified in light of recent events.

  • ||

    Wait, I know. Obama should have said "Why don't you try pooping on it?"

    Course, the only one that finds me funny is my 11 year old.

    Hee! I am, apparently, also 11 years old.

  • ||

    It would be funnier if it weren't so true.

  • Suki||

    Hi domo!

  • Art-P.O.G.||

    I don't know, I thought this cartoon was funny, but that might say more about my state of mind ("lethal, on the verge of frenzy") than the cartoon.

    Greetings to Suki, too, whom I haven't seen in awhile.

  • Suki||

    Hi APOG!

    BTW, the new book I didn't get to help with much is out. Check the blog in my handle.

  • ||

    Money is like manure; it should be spread around.

    My only point is that if you take the Bible straight, as I'm sure many of Reasons readers do, you will see a lot of the Old Testament stuff as absolutely insane. Even some cursory knowledge of Hebrew and doing some mathematics and logic will tell you that you really won't get the full deal by just doing regular skill english reading for those books. In other words, there's more to the books of the Bible than most will ever grasp. I'm not concerned that Mr. Crumb will go to hell or anything crazy like that! It's just that he, like many types of religionists, seems to take it literally, take it straight...the Bible's books were not written by straight laced divinity students in 3 piece suits who white wash religious beliefs as if God made them with clothes on...the Bible's books were written by people with very different mindsets
