Um... I don't get it. I guess Ford was not considered conservative enough, and Carter... was a secret Muslim?

I know this is a little bit of a reach, but, perhaps there are some paralells:

1. The "newcomer" vs. the denizen of the district for decades. Don't forget that Mr. Ford had been a beltway boy for 28 years in 1976. The war hero has been for 26. True, Obama is not really anything "new"-just as Jimmy Carter was not really an outsider.

2. Obama has emerged from the most divisive and closest primary campaign since the GOP's 1976 contest between Ford and Reagan(excluding, of course, the battle between Harry Browne and my boy Hornberger).

Libertarians? Really? It was McCain who compared Obama to Carter, and he probably got it from Limbaugh. If you consider recycling republican talking points funny, your standards must be really low.

I think that this is one of Stantis's better works, from an editorial standpoint. The analogies work on many levels. McCain/Ford is the past-his-expiration-date candidate with a history for *yawn* who's been embraced as the inheritor of a disgraced and corrupt administration, who is forced to balance that with a need to distance himself from them. Obama/Carter is the supposed local hero, with virtually no history and a regional/minority spice, who's gonna whip Washington into shape with the power of his charm to do...something different.

Who is Reagan? If fear to say that it's Schwarzenegger in this fever dream. Not only was Schwarzenegger/Reagan an ex-actor governor of California, that's easy. He was also a Dem-Rep political crossover, sometimes hailed/reviled as a libertarian but always comfortable digging his hands into Dem-style social engineering and regulation, far beyond what political expediency might demand. He's also famous for being a successful idiot.

(A Bush/Nixon analogy along this same theme is surprisingly inapt. Both corrupt, both megalomaniacal, but one a happy young idiot, the other a bitter and clever old fart.)

Funny, Obama isn't as much Carter as he's Clinton.

Carter had (wrongheaded) principles and he stuck to them. Obama is another Clinton, who will always do whatever's politically expedient.

He's already broken his promise on public financing, and backtracked on NAFTA. Watch for his unconditional Iraq withdrawal plans to be adjusted next.

Mitt Romney, you're nothing but a pretty-boy phony. I was a Reagan Republican back when that term still meant something. I campaigned for Reagan in 1980 and 1976. I roomed with him back in the 1960s. We were in scouts together. I'm his godfather. I feast nightly on the blood of Reagans.

It works on many levels, even the simplest of a choice between contrasting mediocrities.
Do have to hand it to McCain's handlers, his 'i hate war' ads from last week were sending the right message off the bat. Too bad he blasted the SCOTUS decision on Gitmo.
McCain worries me, Obama scares me (and not just my wallet).....Barr looks better and better. But 'xcept for a blip during the LP convention he's off the MSM radar.
It's too bad Paul didn't get the muscle to annoint a young, dynamic Goldwater conservative running mate.

I'm about resigned to an Obama presidency. *sigh*

Ummmm - Constitutionally Arnold Schwarzeneggar can never be president.
