Norway's Conservative party could be facing tough negotiations with coalition partners on the opening of the area off the Lofoten islands for exploration after securing a decisive election win over the ruling Labour-led government.

The poll result saw the party, led by incoming Prime Minister Erna Solberg, gain 18 seats while Labour lost nine to give the expected four-party centre-right coalition a majority of 96 in the 169-seat parliament at the time of publication, with final votes still being counted.
