Arizona Immigration Checks Could Restart

The controversial status checks left standing by the Supreme Court are back in district court for consideration

The Supreme Court struck down provisions requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers, making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job and allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

But the justices let stand the portion requiring police to check the status of someone they suspect is not in the United States legally.

The 9th Circuit says the matter now is remanded to the district court in Arizona.
