The Long Arm of the Law
The Star-Ledger reports that New Jersey State Police Sgt. Steven M. Jones stole 3,128 gallons of fuel from state pumps over a period of more than three years. When offiicals finally discovered he was pumping fuel into his personal vehicles, they did not file criminal charges against him. Instead, he was suspended without pay for two weeks then allowed to retire under a deal that forced him to forfeit accumulated personal, holiday and vacation time. He was allowed to keep his pension, but the State Police Retirement Board later reduced it to 50 percent of his final pay from 65 percent and revoked his medical benefits.
