Philly Mom Faces Three Years in Jail Because NJ Has Crazy Gun Laws And She Was Honest With Cop
Shaneen Allen, a mother of two from Philadelphia, said she obtained a legal concealed carry permit and purchased a gun after being robbed twice in the previous year. Last October she was pulled over for an "unsafe lane change" while driving in New Jersey and told the cop she had a gun in the car and a legal permit for it, thinking it would be honored in New Jersey. Instead, Fox News reports:
Allen, who has no criminal record, was later charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of hollow-point bullets. If convicted, the illegal possession of the handgun is a second-degree felony punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence of three years in prison.
"New Jersey's draconian and crazy gun laws gives the judge no discretion here — none," [her attorney Evan] Nappen continued. "You will get three years with no chance of parole if you're convicted of this gun charge. So in the effort of promoting gun control in New Jersey, they've created a situation where very sympathetic people get harmed and turned into the victim by gun laws."
According to her lawyer, a judge declined to allow Allen into a diversion program that would help her avoid jail time.
In the meantime in New Jersey, the police department in Jersey City, where a cop was shot while responding to an armed robbery call over the weekend, is warning its officers that the local Bloods gang has been seeking assistance from regional Bloods groups to kill more cops. According to the internal police memo leaked to the press the department also claims to know the gang is hiding automatic weapons in abandoned buildings.
Strict gun laws passed by working off the emotional reaction to "gun violence," or just hoplophobia in general, ruin the lives of law-abiding people looking to exercise their right to protect themselves while doing nothing at all to change the situation in the cities plagued by violence. Maybe the Bloods haven't heard about the gun laws??
