LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan — A Taliban ambush on a border post in southern Afghanistan killed 11 police officers, an Afghan police official said on Monday.

The attack took place against a series of border check posts in the Shorabak District of Kandahar Province. "Taliban used heavy weapons against our forces, and it was a surprise and sudden attack," said Ziaurrahman Durani, the spokesman for the Kandahar Province police department.

The insurgents then escaped back across the border to Pakistan, where they were believed to be based, Mr. Durani said. The attack took place on Sunday but was not disclosed until Monday.
