Recently, the European Union lifted its arms embargo on Syria and Assad claimed that Russia had sent his regime anti-air missiles. The news comes as Syrian government forces continue to battle rebels (some of whom have links to Al Qaeda) with the assistance of Hezbollah.

Matthew Feeney argues that the recent news coming from Syria provides the latest examples of how complex the situation in Syria is and how any future intervention in Syria would have to be unlike any other foreign intervention in virtue of the diplomatic, geopolitical, ethnic, and security considerations.
