Boston Doctors Continue Treating Wounded from Bombings
Amputations and terrible shrapnel wounds
As investigators track down those responsible for Monday's Boston Marathon attacks, trauma surgeons and doctors at area hospitals are treating many of the 176 wounded victims, whose injuries range from amputated limbs and shrapnel wounds that some may never recover from.
George Velmahos, chief of trauma surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, says eight of the most seriously wounded at the facility are in stable condition in the intensive care unit.
Most had injuries described as "traumatic amputations," in which the blast nearly blew off legs. The doctors, Velmahos said, "just completed what the bomb had done."
