Dietary supplements that contain DMAA, also known as dimethylamylamine, are very popular among fitness enthusiasts and bodybuilders because they provide intense sensations of energy and focus that are comparable to drinking two to three cups of coffee. These products fall under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration, which has not placed any limitation on the sale of products that contain DMAA. Yet as Gregory Conley reports, the Pentagon has recently forced GNC and other vitamin stores operating on military bases to stop selling DMAA products because two soldiers with DMAA in their systems recently died from heart attacks during fitness exercises. There's no evidence that DMAA played any role in these isolated incidents, Conley writes, but that hasn't stopped the Defense Department from trying to act like the FDA.
