European Union officials want to require insurers to charge women more for coverage. Women, on average, pay about 30 percent less than men for car insurance in the EU. Insurers say that's because women are less apt to be involved in accidents. Women also pay less for life insurance. Again, that's because statistics show they are at less risk of dying at an early age than men, say companies. But the European Commission says the different rates violate EU anti-discrimination laws.
