The Reason mission is to advance a free society by developing, applying, and promoting libertarian principles—including individual liberty, free markets, and the rule of law. We use journalism and public policy research to influence the frameworks and actions of policymakers, journalists, and opinion leaders. 

As the Director of Marketing, you'll lead the effort to maximize the reach and impact of content and communications being created across Reason. You will develop the strategy, build the plans, and work with a cross-section of partners to engage a growing audience of free thinkers everywhere. Ultimately, the north star for your work will be to change the terms of everyday debate—making liberty the starting point of meaningful discussion on politics, policy and culture

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of an audience and content deployment strategy designed to connect compelling free market ideas to like-minded individuals.
  • Identify relevant high-value topics, moments, and opportunity spaces for Reason to influence the terms of discussion and debate—locally, at scale.
  • Collaborate with partners in Journalism, Policy, and Publishing to connect authentic Reason editorial perspective to the right audience at the right time.
  • Manage all elements of paid advertising campaigns on various platforms, including management of Reason's Google Ad Grants and Facebook advertising accounts. 
  • Oversee analytics, including defining applicable audience consumption and engagement metrics, measuring audience behavior, and using data to inform marketing plans and activities.  
  • Monitor industry trends, research, and past efforts to identify best practices for channel execution that improves audience experience and outcomes.
  • Manage a team of marketing associates to maximize the impact of resources and opportunities.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of marketing experience.
  • 3+ years of marketing experience with a media firm, think tank, or similar organization whose fundamental product is ideas.
  • Demonstrable track record of achieving significant audience growth through marketing strategies and tactics.
  • Experience developing audience insights to help better understand website, newsletter, video, and podcast audiences' actions and behaviors and how to improve those experiences.
  • Intimate working knowledge of how to design for, optimize to, and target the right audiences across content distribution channels.
  • Advertising campaign creation and media buying experience.
  • Understanding of audience analytics and experience with Google Analytics, Chartbeat, Parse.ly, social media platform insights tools, and other tools for audience insights.
  • Strong familiarity/understanding of libertarian ideas and free-market principles.
  • Strong management skills.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with keen attention to detail.
  • Entrepreneurial and digitally savvy, with exceptional analytical, quantitative, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
