Brickbat: A Teaching Opportunity

Teacher with megaphoneAndrey Popov / Dreamstime.comNew Jersey's Brookdale Community College says it is investigating after sociology professor Howard Finkelstein was caught on video shouting the f-word at a student in class.The student he was shouting at, Christopher Lyle, says it was one of many times Finkelstein has attacked him in class for expressing conservative ideas. The student who shot the video, Joey Smith, says he was tired of Finkelstein singling out Lyle for abuse. "He is basically just lecturing this one student for the whole period," Smith said.

    "He is basically just lecturing this one student for the whole period," Smith said.

    We're always complaining about the student to teacher ratios in classrooms, but when this guy does something about it - WHILE EMPLOYING THE SOCRATIC METHOD - we complain still. What more do you want???

    The day following Finkelstein's outburst, Lyle was pulled out of another class by a college official, Lyle said. The administrator said he knows Lyle is a gun owner and wanted to make sure he wasn't going to hurt anyone, according to Lyle.

    If words are violence then obviously the calmly spoken word "gun" from a right winger is MORE violent than the angered f-bomb of an enraged leftist.

    Conservatives have been poisoning the well for decades and now they want fairness? Really? You've fouled up the country with your B.S., and everyone knows it, and you want to shout 'only kidding, why are you so mean.'

    While NO student should face harrassment by an instructor, its quite clear that this particular students comes to class not to learn but to spout his own views and interrupt instruction. Its an increasingly common right-wing tactic, they want to stifle all discussion from any perspective other than their own, and prevent anyone else's opinion from being heard, and this is how they do that. The fact that he taped it shows that he definitely planned to agitate in order to provoke a reaction. This kid is just looking for an easy paycheck, because you know he plans to sue. Its truly sad.

    (note that another student recorded the exchange because he was tired of the class devolving into berating the one conservative student for the entire period)

    They were able to get all that from a 35 second video that was really just the same 10 second interaction repeated 3 times (for some reason)?

    Pot, I'd like to meet my good friend Kettle.

    They would have had to actually read the article to get that, and they probably didn't bother because if they had, they might have to think about how things had gotten to the point where another student, one who states that he doesn't always agree with the conservative student's views, thought the professor was crossing the line. Then they'd have had to grapple with the idea that maybe it isn't the EVUL conservative student's fault that the class gets derailed but the unhinged leftist professor's.

    The "conservative" position the student was putting forward that prompted the instructor's outburst:

    "...Lyle insisted both men and women can be victims of sexual harassment..."

    In a statement, the college said does not discriminate against anyone for personal beliefs.

    In a statement, the college said the sun rises in the west, because west is to the left, and a better place for the sun to rise.

  • MatthewSlyfield||

    "because west is to the left"

    Only if you are facing North. If you are facing south (unless you are at the North Pole), West is to the right and East is to the left. At the North Pole every direction is south.

  • target||

    I think that like, north is subjective, and so like, to me, any direction I am looking is north so west is always on my left or something.

  • LarryA||

    "Oh, but always facing north, or representing the globe or maps with north as 'up,' is eurocentric."

    Yes, that's a real quote from a real SJW, during a land navigation class.

  • Longtobefree||

    Yeah, well, that is true only in the real world.
    In Al Gores internet, and most maps, north is to the top, and the left is where they put west, so I go with the electrons and paper.

    Besides, the snide comment can't be made under any other assumption.
