3 Big Stories at the RNC Convention

Where do Ron Paul supporters go? Will the GOP talk about cutting spending? And what about social issues?

Reason's Matt Welch explains the three major stories to be on the lookout for during the RNC convention in Tampa, Florida:

1. Where do Ron Paul supporters go?

2. Will the GOP actually lay out plans for shrinking government in a principled way?

3. What about social issues, including immigration?

    1) Home or the pub

    2) Heh.

    3) What about them?

  • | |

As best I can tell, Ron Paul supporters can go fuck themselves as far as the GOP is concerned.

  • Concerned Citizen| |

Exactly. That can isn't going to kick itself down the road.

  • sarcasmic| |

Wish you had kept the beard. Now I can't make fun of you for it.

    =(

i can see why he grew it. He looks like he's from a school paper.

What would your reaction be to Welch growing bugger grips as a sort of compromise between the two extremes?

  • | |

"bugger grips". I fucking love Australish.

  • LTC(ret) John| |

"Bugger grips" - Is that similar to the American slang "prison pussy"?

  • LTC(ret) John| |

    Or are they sideburns?

  • sarcasmic| |

    Porkchops.

  • LTC(ret) John| |

Makes sense. I might have to use "bugger grips" from now on.

  • | |

Don't think so. Urban Dictionary says

A "prison pussy" is a configuration of facial hair which surrounds a man's mouth (also known as a "goatee").

A secondary meaning is a male mouth performing fellatio.

Bugger grips by contrast are sideburns, particularly very large, muttonchop style growths. The idea is that of you are being sodomized, your, er, special friend can reach around and grab onto your facial hair

Re "prison pussy", in the navy, they call that "sea pussy" and in the army, they call it "field pussy". I think the Marines just call it "fun".

  • sarcasmic| |

I could be wrong, but Matt doesn't exactly strike me as an Elvis fan.

  • Rich| |

I suggest Matt adopt this beard style. Instant respect.

  • Hollywood| |

I wish they had put Oppenheimer in front of the camera. She's hot.

    1. To hell.

    2. Not even in an unprincipled way.

    3. AMERICA FOR AMERICANS. Real Americans.

  • LTC(ret) John| |

    1. Hither and yon,

    2. Maybe - but who cares about plans if you do not execute them?

    3. Same bloviating with no action (I hope) taken - the usual sop to so-cons. The dark night of fascism always decending on America, yada, yada.

    4) How close does the Sarah Palin-lookalike stripper look?

  • dinkster| |

I might need them both side by side in a red lit bedroom to be sure.

    2. Mmmm....Indoubitablaaayyyy...mmmm

    3. What about my bank account? And my Holy Desert Shield? That keeps me dry all through the day ah haaaa.

Also I thought the three biggest stories in Tampa were:

    1. Where will the Sarah Palin look-alike stripper go now?

    2. Will the Buccanneers recover from having a completely inept coach and zero team oversite since Chucky left?

    3. What about the strippers, including that Sarah Palin look-alike stripper?

Shouldn't your response for #3 be "SKYRIM BELONGS TO THE NORDS!"?

I have a feeling the ambient temperature is about to go up in Florida, gonna be a whole lot of HOT AIR down there.

    2. Will the GOP actually lay out plans for shrinking government in a principled way?

2a. Will unicorns fly overhead, pissing Dom Pérignon and shitting Godiva?

  • Zero| |

"1. Where do Ron Paul supporters go?"

They disappeared until the next full moon.

"2. Will the GOP actually lay out plans for shrinking government in a principled way?"

Fuck no. As usual, the Republican nominee (Mittens, this time around) will speak about fixing the country in the vaguest of terms to disguise the fact that he has no plan or even intention of scaling the government (or the executive branch, specifically) back.

"3. What about social issues, including immigration?"

The GOP will adhere to its usual five-point plan:

    1) God is good

    2) Gays are bad

    3) Abortion is murder

    4) Immigrants want to steal your cubicle job

    5) Drugs are lurking outside your window waiting to rape your children (Mmm'kay?)

If conservatives, catholics and christians knew what Mitt Romney believes they would not support him. People need to spread the word.

During the contraception debate ThinkProgress cranked out scores of pieces explaining why the Catholic Church was wrong to "impose its values on fellow citizens," as an April 13 post put it. Yet by August, ThinkProgress had discovered the virtues of religion's participation in politics: "Catholic Nuns Send Letter to Romney Challenging His 'Woeful lack of Knowledge' About the Poor," it bugled a few days ago.
