Still No Comment From the People at MILF

Speaking of the Phoenix New Times, here's a fantastic story about warring groups of uppity mothers.

Seems that Mothers Against Drunk Driving is claiming all legal rights to the phrase "Mothers Against," and has sent a cease and desist letter demanding that "Mothers Against Illegal Aliens" change its name.

And the New York Times® will be claiming all legal rights to the phrase "All the" as in news fit to print.

Taktix® | October 19, 2007, 11:26am | #

BY the way, I own the legal rights to the word "and."

Pay up, suckers...

Can we send a cease and desist to MADD seeing as it run by someone who is not even a woman, let alone a mother?

gaijin | October 19, 2007, 11:29am | #

I hereby make claim to all references to the phrase "Mothers for..."

Why must mothers always be against something, anyway??

Father Stabber | October 19, 2007, 11:42am | #

Has anyone copped "Motherfuckers Against..." yet?

ClubMedSux | October 19, 2007, 11:44am | #

For what it's worth, I believe "Drunks Against Mad Mothers" is still in the public domain.

gaijin | October 19, 2007, 11:45am | #

Has anyone copped "Motherfuckers Against..." yet?

Wouldn't that just be "Dads Against..."?

Or were you seeking to be more inclusive.

Shannon Chamberlain | October 19, 2007, 11:45am | #

Let's just hope they all claw each other's eyes out and leave it at that.

gee | October 19, 2007, 11:47am | #

Considering that the President of MADD is a man, they should drop the M. And they are now mostly crusading against *all* underage drinking. So they should drop the second D and just call themselves "AD" (Against Drunks). Problem solved.

Reinmoose | October 19, 2007, 11:49am | #

From what I've seen, ClubMedSux, an organization titled "Drunks Against Driving Mothers" would be totally appropriate. God, they're such dangerous drivers

Of course, there's always the following articles and interviews...

There's more up there... just a bit of digging required...

"Mothers against" sounds descriptive (suggestive at most) to me and thus both MADD and MAIA have a limited scope of protection. I'm not aware of any evidence that MADD has acted against other "Mothers Against" groups, do the mark is pretty diluted anyway. Under Federal TM law, MADD has a pretty weak case (based purely on what I read from the article). Maybe AZ has some other provisions.

/It drives me crazy when companies or groups bring weak TM claims to stifle the speech of others.

Coming soon: MAIAMILF

the lizard | October 19, 2007, 12:31pm | #

I think MAIAILF is what you're going for, MP. Of course MADDILF would make sense too.

I was seeking to accurately describe the current officeholders at MADD without having to coerce them into changing their acronym.

Drew W | October 19, 2007, 1:13pm | #

Ever since the Million Man March, which had way less than a million marchers, there have been plenty of advocacy groups that use numbers, such as New York's endlessly-monikered One Hundred Blacks In Law Enforcement Who Care.

Maybe MAIA could avoid controversy by calling themselves One Million Mad Mothers Who Care About Five Million Illegal Immigrants Who Would Probably Become Drunk Drivers If They Ever Climbed Out Of The Trunk And Into The Driver's Seat.

That should keep everybody happy.

Oops. One word too many. Lemme help:

And they are now mostly crusading against *all* underage drinking.

Sam Grove | October 19, 2007, 3:43pm | #

What's in a name?
Instead of 'illegal alien", how about 'illegal human'?

SM | October 19, 2007, 3:57pm | #

What ed said. Excellent headline. LOLZ.

juris imprudent | October 19, 2007, 4:05pm | #

Are you kidding me - no one popped the obvious response here?

C'mon all, how about Grannies Against Illegal Aliens!

GAIA rocks!
