A Yen for Crime

In Japan, police sergeant Naofumi Nomura has been arrested after he allegedly snatched the purse of a 75-year-old woman. Two high school boys saw the theft, chased him down, and caught him.

Beach Bum

Jacksonville, Florida, police officer Lewis Keller has been suspended for seven days after driving over a woman sunbathing on the beach. Anne Marie Giffen suffered a broken pelvis, broken ribs, and head and spinal injuries.

Just Playing Through

A group of golfers were just about to tee off at a course near Kent, England, when a group of teens brandishing planks of wood demanded they hand their equipment over to them. Instead, the golfers began beating the teens with their golf clubs. Police responded to the melee and arrested the teens. This being England, they also arrested the golfers for causing great bodily harm.

The Pole Position

Ewelina Bledniak's parents immigrated to the United States from Poland when she was just two. Her father is now an American citizen, and her mother is a permanent resident seeking citizenship. But apparently, their lawyer did not properly submit paperwork for Ewelina, now 11. The government says she must return to Poland, a nation whose language she does not understand, or they will deport her.

Love and Marriage

Afghanistan's parliament has approved and president Hamid Karzai has signed a law which critics say legalizes rape in marriage. The law, which applies only to the minority Shia population, allows husbands to demand sex from their wives and and to forbid them from leaving the house without permission. Now, women's activists in that country say the government is set to approve a similar law that will cover the majority Sunni population.
