Dr. David Mandy and his family were flying to Florida from Detroit Metropolitan Airport when Transportation Security Administration agents spotted his son Drew carrying a six-inch plastic toy hammer. Drew is 29, but he is severely handicapped and has carried the hammer for "security" for 20 years. Agents told the family he couldn't board the plan with a "weapon," forcing them to make him toss it away. The agents also subjected Drew to a pat-down search.
