Maricopa County, Arizona, Sheriff Joe Arpaio says his office doesn't racially profile people while looking for illegal immigrants. So how do they decide whom to question? "Certain criteria," said Arpaio. "No identification. Look like you just came from Mexico, and they admit it. That's enough." Jerry Sheridan, Arpaio's director of custody, explains, “I think you can tell people that are not from this country. And I’m not talking Hispanics. Maybe someone from France looks a little different than somebody from Europe or somebody from England looks a little bit different than we do."

He's right. Mexicans, especially northern Mexicans, look different than Guatemalans, Hondurans or Salvadoreans.
Live around Mexicans long enough and you can definitely tell apart those who have more european features (i.e. Spanish or German) vs. those with more Aztec, Yaqui or other native tribal features. I've gotten pulled over in Phoenix just because I was driving a POS and had a car full of junk. Definitely think Arpaio is over the line a little...
Just say Achtung! real loud and watch the results:
French people's arms shoot up in the air.
Brits smile and you can see their "teeth"
Italians will run over to assist you but trip and fall.
The Swiss will offer to hold your wallet until the unpleasantness
is over.
Yet another seriously stupid Reason post in support of illegal activity. The MexAms who prey on recent arrivals can certainly tell the difference, and thieves can immediately spot a tourist from a local.
P.S. In case anyone replies to this, their responses will almost assuredly be ad homs, thereby conceding my points and showing the childish, anti-intellectual nature of libertarians. Dozens of comments here have shown that the phrase "fascist libertarian" isn't an oxymoron.
You presume too much (look at my response to Qwerty). And I cannot agree with you that libertarians are anti-intellectual--you would be hard pressed to generate a decent argument for that one. As for this "fascist libertarian" phrase you've put forward, I hardly think a political ideology based around the non-agression axiom can be termed in such a way.
The article is not in support to illegal activity (which would not be a problem if the imaration system was not a such a joke) it shows how dumb law enforcement is to think that France IS NOT IN EUROPE!
Or that Europe is not a country. An equally moronic woman in an episode of Penn and Teller's Bullshit! believed that Europe was the second best country in the world.
How can someone: completely miss the point of the piece; use the term "fascist libertarian" on a libertarian site; accuse others of ad homs and THEN spout off about anti-intellectual nature of anything at all.
Yo dotcom PULEEZ, most of the flamers here do MUCH better than that.
Geography seems like one area a border control official ought to at least know fairly well.
He's arresting illegals. The problem with this is what exactly? He's the Sheriff, he's SUPPOSED to arrest those who do illegal things.
somebody from England looks a little bit differently than we do
It's the Vitamin A.
I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men, and German to my horse
Canada could have enjoyed English government, French culture, and American know-how. Instead it ended up with English know-how, French government, and American culture. ~ John Robert Colombo
Heaven is where the police are English, the cooks are French, the engineers are German, the lovers are Italian, and everything is organized by the Swiss.
Hell is where the police are German, the cooks are English, the engineers are French, the lovers are Swiss, and everything is organized by the Italians.
I can't disagree with him. Ever notice the difference between Swedish Women and British Women?
Maybe the director of custody is correct. Wasn't France where the Coneheads came from?
I believe they're from New Jersey, by way of France, by way of Remulak. If only Arpaio could be the one shipped over to Remulak!
Meh. The real idiocy is thinking that we shouldn't use racial profiling when searching for illegal immigrants in an are where the illegal immigrants are predominantly of latin American origin.
And when searching for illegal distilleries, we should investigate all the Bubbas first. I'm with you.
