The Atlanta Police Department has consistently underreported crime for many years, according to an internal audit. Linder & Associates found evidence that the underreporting was a result of a combination of negligence and deliberate efforts to improve the city's image for tourism. Violent crime was actually 6.8% higher than officially reported in 2002.
