Mr. Giuliani has declared he will be rooting for the dreaded Boston Red Sox against the Colorado Rockies in the World Series, which began last night. From the Bronx to his childhood haunts in Brooklyn, there was a baffled anger bordering on rage.Rudy Giuliani: Everyone wants to send him a message. Why, you could almost say... I mean, it brings to mind... it raises... screw the setup, I'm just gonna roll the film:
"They should burn his seat that he sat in at Yankee Stadium -- how’s that?" said George Patsin, a Brooklyn restaurateur. "They should burn it on TV so I can watch."

The same day it was reported that the five families of the New York mafia came within a single vote of putting a hit out on Rudy Giuliani in 1987Goddamn bureaucracy.
Kidding, seriously; I would much prefer to see Giuliani rejected by the public in a free and fair election.

I had been expecting an entire primary season filled with Rudy-Ska puns, jokes, clips, etc.Why the delay?

Maybe he just prefers the place Boston to Colorado--that's how I root for teams because otherwise I don't give a crap about sports.Thomas Paine's Goiter | October 26, 2007, 12:50am | #

That clip brought to mind the Clash's "Rudy Can't Fail."Hell, all the white guys in that band looked like Clash ripoffs anyway.

Jeff P,Nothing arbitrary or irrational about it. The concept of rooting for your own league/conference is wide spread, but you never root for your arch-rival. The rule/choice of arch-rival may be arbitrary and irrational (although usually just arbitrary), but the anger is very rational. Rudy is violating a well understood rule.

Rudi aint a true Yankees fan. That would be like me rooting for the Steelers, and that aint gonna happen.
Hates me some Steelers.

I can think of many, many better reasons for Rudy to be set on fire, so what's one more arbitrary, irrational, neo-tribal one?Not that I am in any way advocating for or suggesting that Rudy be set on fire. I'm advocating for the Stark Fist of Removal, personally. Failling that, I'll settle for the fist of any angry god that cares to step up.

Rudy is violating a well understood rule.A rule amongst fools. Tribalism in professional fandom is still tribalism. Seeing laBron sport a Yankees cap at the Jake made my day. Good for him, and screw the hapless Injuns.

scottp,I understand your Steelers hatred. It has to be tough when:
A: We knocked you out of the playoffs last year, despite having an 8-8 season, and...
B: Snapped the leg of your whiny-boy QB back in 2005.
But really, by now you should be used to being our prison bitch.
Go Steelers...
Taktix® | October 26, 2007, 10:23am | #
J Sub D,I think what everyone's forgetting is that both the Red Sox and the Yankees are from the American league, and therefore they both represent said league in the World Series vs. the National League.
As you may note above, I am an avowed Steelers fan, but if it was Cincinnati vs. ____________(NFC Team), I'd pull for Cincinnati.
Not like that'll ever happen though ;)

VM: Nope, Bengal fan, as painful as it is to say sometimes. No sympathy here. Think Detroit Lions. We only have sympathy for Cubs fans. And not much at that.
scottp | October 26, 2007, 10:56am | #
B: Snapped the leg of your whiny-boy QB back in 2005.Whiny boy? Carson Palmer may be a lot of things, but "whiny" aint one of em. He even said after the game that he held no animosity toward Kimo.
Other than that, the rest of your taunts are just typical, obnoxious, Stooler fan bullshit.

Detroit really is painful. It's the football equivalent of the Edsel. And you shouldn't have any sympathy for the Cubbies fans. For the treatment of Steve Bartman, they deserve heartbreak.
(Steve did nothing wrong, and it's embarrassing how he was treated. The fucking gov even got in on the act)
Brewers fans can sympathize.

I wonder what Brady's QB rating would be if he played a game where the Bengals and Steelers both had their defenses on the field at the same time?90?
92?

I wonder what Brady's QB rating would be if he played a game where the Bengals and Steelers both had their defenses on the field at the same time? And every team in the NFL had 5 chances to draft him (6th round pick). Think any talent scouts/GMs got fired over that?

Yeah, 'Beaters! :)He once told Diane Sawyer he was fairly certain that God himself was rooting for the [Yankees].Jeez, crazypants! Judging by this factoid, you'd think it would be more apropros for Giuiliani to be rooting for the Rockies, god's self-chosen team.

Wouldn't it be ironic if Giuliani loses in the primary becauses he was truthful about this one thing, and thus failed to carry New York state?Assuming this was honesty, and not some carefully planned political calculus to pick up votes in Boston while still carrying New York.
Saw Romney on TV a few months back being asked which sports team he supported for an upcoming game, and he managed to convey the message that, gosh, both teams were great, just great.

Hey big government Rudy. You aren't the kind of Republican we like here in Colorado anyway.Mo | October 27, 2007, 2:32am | #
Rudy wasn't doing this for Massachusetts, he was doing it for NH, which is firmly a Red Sox state. The problem is, no halfway knowledgable Sox fan would fall for it because they'd root for any team over the Yankees. It's just like how no self-respecting Dodger fan would root for the Giants and vice versa.
joe | October 27, 2007, 2:07pm | #
Pro Libertate,Right now, fear the 'Skins. If that very impressive defense can put consistent pressure on Brady and slow down the game, it could be a real ballgame. And the Pats' ground attack is riddled with injuries.
I'm not kidding, this could be their one loss.
