Jeff P,Nothing arbitrary or irrational about it. The concept of rooting for your own league/conference is wide spread, but you never root for your arch-rival. The rule/choice of arch-rival may be arbitrary and irrational (although usually just arbitrary), but the anger is very rational. Rudy is violating a well understood rule.

J Sub D,I think what everyone's forgetting is that both the Red Sox and the Yankees are from the American league, and therefore they both represent said league in the World Series vs. the National League.
As you may note above, I am an avowed Steelers fan, but if it was Cincinnati vs. ____________(NFC Team), I'd pull for Cincinnati.
