William Niskanen, the chairman emeritus of the
Cato Institute, former head of Ronald Reagan's Council of Economic
Advisers, and one of the great figures in the libertarian movement,
passed away last month at the age of 78. In this 1978
interview with Reason, conducted while Niskanen was still
working as chief economist for the Ford Motor Company, a position
he later lost because of his principled opposition to protectionist
U.S. trade policies, Niskanen discusses tax reform, limiting
federal spending, and why government has an inherent bias towards
bureaucracy.
