Last week, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top
American commander in Afghanistan, told The New York Times
that as part of America’s new Afghan offensive, “We’ve got a
government in a box, ready to roll in.” But as Terry Michael
argues, that statement reveals a dangerous case of hubris. Military
nation-building is a fool’s errand, Michael writes, particularly
when there is no indigenous infrastructure to build a nation, let
alone build a liberal democracy.
