I can't believe I'm about to defend a point of plausibility in an
Ayn Rand novel, but as I recall the plane crash's location wasn't
random. It was caused by John Galt's Magic Ray Screen thingie, and
only happened because Dagney Taggart was following Galt's plane
into the gulch at the time.
Of course I always wondered why Galt's engine didn't flame
out too, but I've never actually lost any sleep over it.
