Over the weekend, President Barack Obama stepped back from his insistence that Congress establish a government health insurance scheme to compete with private insurers as part of health care reform. Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) has proposed setting up nonprofit health insurance cooperatives as an alternative.
