Long before
Barack Obama incited our movie stars to give up plastic grocery
bags in the name of a more righteous America, writes Greg Beato, a
growing number of lower profile altruists began serving their
fellow citizens by taking on local thugs, helping stranding
motorists, volunteering at soup kitchens, and more. They call
themselves Real Life Superheroes, and as their name suggests, their
inspiration comes from Batman, Spider-man, and the countless other
icons of spandex-clad virtue who populate our supposedly
meaningless and morally corrosive pop culture.
