Politicians in
California and other states want to force automakers to raise their
fuel economy standards to levels higher than those adopted by the
federal government. They argue that higher mileage standards are
needed to cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce America's
dependence on foreign oil. But as Science Correspondent Ronald
Bailey writes, what the politicians really want is to make it more
expensive to drive. They just don't want to say so.
