Last weekend,
New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress inadvertently shot
himself in the leg at a New York City nightclub and now faces a
mandatory minimum sentence on each of two felony weapons charges.
And while there's no question that Burress should have handled
himself differently, writes Jonathan Blanks, an individual’s
actions should always be judged on an individual basis—not by the
opportunistic politicians that pass mandatory minimum laws.
