Nick Gillespie | October 29, 2008
This week, reason's Michael C. Moynihan and Nick Gillespie sit down with journalist Eli Lake and Against the State author and Dickinson College professor Crispin Sartwell to talk about smoking, anarchy, the Iraq war, hip hop, and much more.
Approximately 35 minutes; shot and edited by Dan Hayes.
Previous episodes:
The Onion's Joe Garden and The Atlantic's Megan McArdle.
Alternative to Marriage's Nicky Grist and In Search of Bill Clinton author John D. Gartner.

If they didn't interrupt each other so goddamned much one of them might actually get out a fully-formed thought.

Fascist!
Eli was annoying. There is no baby in the bathwater. It's that Starwars trash compactor monster.
Wowsers, could piercing guy be more of a waste of space. He is stoned, right? Bald guys barely suppressed rage is entertaining.
An anarchist who votes? What a dipshit. It's Giving legitimacy
to phony authorities when the choice is turd sandwich/giant douche,
coke and pepsi, kodos and kang.
Consent of the governed means ALL of the governed, not just a
majority or a plurality. Mob rule is no more legitimate than
dictatorship.

LOL. I too was not an Eli fan. He seemed incredulous at, well,
pretty much all reasonable notions that were mentioned.
But piercing guy was not exactly the best spokesman for anarchism.
I don't think he was a waste of space (mostly he just couldn't
finish a sentence because Eli was sputtering like a choking Pinto's
engine), but he didn't have his shit together. I particularly liked
the part where he had a hard-on for Palin; that's the kind of wacky
off-the-wall shit I've personally come to expect from philosophy
professors. "Hey, I'm an anarchist, but I'm voting for Obama, and I
really have a hard-on for Palin!"

Higher education is a racket. In a world without subsidized student
loans and grants, half of those tenured fuckers would be delivering
pizza.
Crispin, dude, I really hope you were just having an off day
because it sounds like you have never thought about anarchism once
before you stepped onto the stage today. Don't think I'll be buying
that book. Eli tried, and failed miserably, at hiding his contempt
for him. He does have a sexy Tom Brokaw-ish voice, though.
Good discussion, otherwise.
I don't think he was a waste of space
Yes, I was a little harsh. His posture was highly amusing I thought
though. It also seemed that for most of the discussion his brain
was moving about 80% slower than everyone else's.
Worst talk show yet. Neither guest was interesting or insightful...annoying actually.
I was so hoping for a pop reference dance off between Gillespie & Moynihan...too bad it didn't happen :(
Is that the Arlington House edition of "Theory and History" by Ludwig von Mises on the bookshelf behind Nick?
Man, I couldn't even watch the whole thing. I couldn't bear to
see Sartwell get steamrolled so thoroughly. Seriously, if you're
gonna say you're an anarchist, you should be able to argue the
position of anarchy. Gillespie did a better job defending
Sartwell's positions than he did.
Did he successfully respond to any argument against him here? I'm
asking seriously, 'cause I had to stop watching.
I don't get the whole Eli Lake thing - he's a mediocre writer for a failed newspaper and a bit of a blowhard and yet he's all over bloggingheads.tv and now on reason.tv
Don't listen to these people. This was the best "episode" of Reason TV I've yet seen, and everyone was clever enough to hold attention and keep it cool. Cool people smoke, right?
Hah, R Totale!
I noticed that Sartwell's voice sounds just like Tom Brokaw as
well.
