Palin Sympathies: Liberals and Conservatives Reversing Roles?
The whole blogosphere is of one opinion when it comes to Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric: Not good. But unlike the responses to her convention speech, the Charles Gibson interview, and the rumors about Trig, this time around liberals sound sympathetic and conservatives sound anywhere from embarrassed to angry.

And now, an excerpt from my inner monologue, as transcribed while watching various clips from Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric (I can't link to them; they're too painful):

I have watched this whole Palin thing with some twinge of personal recognition. I come from a family of seven kids by four women. As I've said before, I've got brothers born in the same year, and brothers born to best friends. My father was a high-school drop-out. I am a college drop-out. I was a father by 24--my father had kids when he was 22. I come to books and learned things in a hard, organic way. I was watching Palin explain to Couric how it could be that she just got a passport last year, and I was thinking, "Shit, I don't have a passport now."

I'm reminded of the situation you see every now and then in sports, when a talented athlete—which, conveniently enough, Palin was—gets a taste of heavy duty coaching and, rather than being built up, is broken down, losing confidence in his game, becoming tentative, second-guessing himself even to the point of paralysis. I don't know whether that's what's happened to Sarah Palin. But from where I sit, it sure looks like it.
I'm not saying it's a trend (Daily Kos & TPM are nowhere near "sympathizing" with Palin; National Review would follow her to Giedi Prime and back), or that the above sentiments will remain static through the first vice presidential debate, only that for the moment, it's an interesting quandary: What's with all the sympathetic (condescending?) liberals and the many resentful conservatives? Off the top of my head, I can think of two explanations, neither of which, if true, say anything good about the people whose positions have changed: Democrats no longer see Palin as a potent political threat, and are now treating her like a human being; Republicans no longer see her as a ringer, and are now treating her as dead weight and regretting their initial enthusiasm. A more cynical question: will all her fumbling-inspired sympathy ultimately play out in her favor?

She's taking such a beating that people are responding with their
instinctive reflexes towards the weak. Liberals want to protect
her, and conservatives want to put their sins on her and send her
into the desert.

Bingo. Her mystique just got destroyed, making her non-threatening
to her opponents and a serious disappointment to her supporters. In
fact, her face-plant was so severe that some of her less rabid
detractors are feeling bad. It's like winning a baseball game 15-0.
You won, but you feel bad that the other team sucked so bad. 9-6
would have been better.

Meh, she stumbled over a few phrases, but at least what she
eventually says is accurate. She's not spouting nonsense about
FDR's speech on TV in 1929, or telling the handicapped to stand up,
or calling his own campaigns' ad "terrible" then later saying he
never saw it. If you wanted to believe she was unqualified, you
could, but there's a lot more evidence against Biden.
The meter now stands at seven. In Slate, Christopher Beam
argues that Biden misspeaks so consistently that the senator's
gaffes no longer matter: "It's almost as if, by committing so many
gaffes, he has become immune to their effects." Perhaps. But do
voters think more highly of him for it?
What's clear is that the results of the vice presidential
experiment are already in. Palin, the "regular citizen," is running
a flawless campaign. Biden, the man of "prudence" and "experience,"
is making a fool of himself two or three times a week
If Americans wanted slick public speakers, they wouldn't have
elected Bush twice.

I liked certain aspects of the Lynch movie, but it failed utterly

That's almost exactly what I thought. She's been over-coached. Of
course, the blame for that falls ultimately on her; she should have

Couric."

I was a little disappointed with the Spacers' apparent statist
views. Really, the contrast between the communistic Cities and the
otherwise individualistic Spacers would've been much more
interesting politically if Asimov had taken the individualism to
its logical political ends. No matter, I love the books for other
reasons.
Overall, Asimov appeared to have been pretty liberal in a big
government way, so I doubt it would've occurred to him to make the
Spacers libertarians. Again, I'm a huge fan of his, so this
personal failing on his part (no offense intended to those who
share his views), doesn't really matter. I may go read
Foundation for the hundredth time, now that I think about
it.

Overall, Asimov appeared to have been pretty liberal in a

My take on it, though it was years ago, was that he kind of
disapproved of both societies. Both were too extreme. So I got the
sense he thought somewhere in the middle was the right place to
be.

Yes, I think you're right. What's interesting is that he definitely
rejected the idea that the Athenian/Spartan lifestyle of the
Spacers was an ideal. I suspect that he's wrong--we probably would
be better individually and culturally with robot slaves and long
lives.
The Cities would be appalling places to live. Except for all of the
yeast-based imitation food, of course. I'm a little nauseated just
thinking about it.

Can we stop with the nonsense? It is amazing to me the level of
stupidity everyone views everyone else with. It started in Dec/Jan
with big city liberals telling me they weren't voting for Obama
because other white people would never vote for him. Then it was
that Rudi was winning even though he was losing every primary. Then
it was that Clinton could win even though a 4th grader could do the
math. Then it was that Clinton would win because she drank beer.
Then it was that the Dems were divided and the Repubs were united
behind McCain (even though he never got more than a 1/3 of the vote
in any contest and barely over 60% after everyone else dropped
out). Then to how McCain picking the most inexperienced VP pick
ever was brilliant even though his whole race was based on
experience mattering.
Now we are told that being stupid will make people like you so much
they will change their vote to you.
Stop it. No matter how much the media tries this stuff, nobody
wants to vote for a dummy. This is why Palin supporters attack the
media, they don't want to admit she has no clue. Nobody who votes
for her in the end will tell you they think she is not ready. But
the people who will vote against her will, and when she is exposed
so obviously, some people switch from the first group to the
second. Not all, but enough in the end. But nobody is going to vote
for her because they feel sorry she is so stupid.

Excuse me, why does the fact that liberals are beginning to feel
sorry for Palin now that she appears to be in seriously over her
head not "say anything good" about them? This sounds like the "both
sides are equally bad" reflex that passes for objectivity. If
liberals were gloating, would that be a "better" response?

Dune is kind of a neat text that way. Not a terrible lot f
visual description, and a whole lot...I guess you could say
*missing* from any kind of unified plot development (in the film
sense). So any film made out of the book is gonna have to make up a
helluva lot from thin dry air just to be coherent.
Put me down has having liked both the Sci-fi version and the David
Lynch version, for very different reasons of course. If you get a
different director with a coherent and detailed vision who is not
an idiot, I imagine another film will be just as good.

I'm not a big Biden fan, but Biden is a guy who smacked around

My take on Palin's interviews is partly that she's not necessarily
the best interview subject and partly that she's got to toe the
McCain line, with whom I suspect she disagrees a fair amount.

Shortly after McCain picked her as his running mate I got into a
"discussion" with a friend of mine. My position was that she isn't
qualified and was going to end up looking foolish. He, being the
quintessential GOP apologist, was drooling all over her. Well
tempers flared, words were exchanged, feelings were hurt...and now
one of us has a slice of humble pie waiting.
She's stumbling because she isn't speaking from the heart. She's
regurgitating the neo-Trotskyist horseshit that the GOP is spoon
feeding to her. Out here Alaskan's are mostly live-and-let-live and
that's what she's accustomed to; leaving everybody the hell alone.
That approach to leadership doesn't mesh very well with today's
imperialist brand of Republican. If McCain had done his vetting he
might have realized that.
I'm calling this "Sarah's Revenge". McCain opposed punching a hole
in ANWAR so she's going to sink his shot at the Whitehouse. Hehe.

Part of the problem is overlapping terms, like "Spacers", though in
Dune they were more commonly referred to as "navigators" or
"steersmen". Actually, wait, I know it can't be Dune, because you
refer to robot slaves, and in the Dune Universe "thinking machines"
are banned.

I really liked the Sci-Fi Dune they did about five years ago
much better than the Lynch version.
The children of dune sequel blew chunks.
Asimov was pro-socialist but anti-communist, the way a typical big
city liberal of his era would be. And later in life, he would
nominally be a Green, (but still anti-communist). In those first
two sequels to the Foundation series (which I liked as well) he
comes out in favor of the Gaia model over either the centrally
controlled autocratic republic (1st Foundation) or a limited power
technocratic aristocracy (2nd foundation). But, to be fair he
acknowledged his ambivalence and slight hypocricy in his choice
when he had his main character say somthing like "I think Gaia is
the best choice, but I do not personally want to live under such a
system"

I saw Lynch's film first before reading the book. I like all
things Lynch (well, maybe not all), and I liked the film. I read
the book later and liked it as well.
It's neat watching the right wingers and their gyrations about
Palin's stupidity becoming harder and harder to deny. We've got all
the classic playground comebacks from them: yeah, well, your guy
said something stupid too or well, she wasn't perfect, but it's not
her fault, etc.
They consistently miss that the big difference between Biden and
Palin is that one of them does not literally hide from questions
from the press. When one hides from the press, and when the few
times she does speak to them produce hilarity, it makes the
conclusion that she is not bright harder and harder to deny...

Episiarch and I were picking back up a discussion about whether the
Spacers in Asimov's The Caves of Steel series were
libertarians. They seemed like they might be in the first book, but
after reading the rest, I decided they weren't.
Of course, during that discussion, the thread reverted to its
natural state, which is a discussion of Dune. Really, the
default of all Hit & Run threads is either Dune or
Planet of the Apes.

Palin's problem is that she has so many factors that work in combination to make one conclude that she just ain't very smart: the (relative to Biden or Obama) low educational attainment, the fundie religious background (let's pray to God for helpp with that pipeline), the unprecedented hiding from the press, and now her solidly dumb answers in the few interviews she has given. Obama, Biden, or McCain for that matter just don't have nearly that many factors working against them to make anyone think they are not that bright...

Ahhh, I was just hackin on you guys. I just never had much
interest in sci-fi. Or reading for what it's worth. I was more
interested in music and outdoorsy stuff. Started reading a lot
about 20 years ago, mostly sociology, anthropology, religion and
Steinbeck. Big C.S. Lewis and Charles G. Finney fan.
I do sometimes look at my bank statements and wish I had been more

candidate.

The problem most Republicans do not understand her is that Moderate
Republicans which is basicly a liberal(tinge of fiscal) is now half
or close to that of the party.
Many prominent Democrats see Palin as fantastic. Some have switched
sides. The idelogs from both parties, will never change and will
always be confused by Palin. Until they start thinking
constitutional beliefs.

Cleary demonstrates who carries the Down Syndrome trait in her
family, because of this we (the democrats) will allow you to send
her back to Wacky-silla without prejudice and select another
candidate.
For this consideration the Republicans agree to sell Alaska to
Russia (with Palin) and never mention the State of Alaska or her
again.

Yeah, d@mn those flip-flopping liberals. Just like that one
politician:
- first he said, "the fundamentals of our economy are strong", then
said we're in a crisis
- he then added that it's a bad idea to bailout AIG, then said it's
a good idea, the very next day
- said he would suspend his campaign, then unsuspends it
- said he will not attend the debate, if the bailout negotiations
are still pending, then he attends the debate, even with the
negotiations still not done
... Uggh, thos flip-flopping liberals! I can't believe Democratic
senator, John McCain, flip-flopped this much, all in A WEEK! Uggh,
can't stand flip-flopping liberals!

I forgot to add that Democratic senator, John McCain, is such a "maverick", he even goes against his own stances. He even "reforms" himself! Now, how can anyone beat that?! His idea of "change" is to quickly change his stance a day or so later.
