What's up With Wired's Presidential To Do List?

Magazines of every stripe are going wild with policy suggestions aimed at the next administration. Wired is one of those magazines, and its October issue contains 15 ideas "about how to fix the things that need fixing." (Earlier this month, Brian Doherty analyzed two similar lists from Foreign Policy.) After reading these babies online and in print, I'm tempted to conclude that they're all for show. (One Wired editor to another: Goddamnit, man, we need more Web 2.0 imagery!) The compilers seldom take applicability into consideration, and the Wired list in particular builds on the assumption that the next president lacks a concrete agenda for environmental concerns and foreign policy. Cabinet members, too, have plans, and so do the expert yappers in the next concentric circle. A group of West Coast journo nerds isn't likely to be anywhere near the bullseye.

But just for a minute, let's pretend that the endless excretion of lists titled, "What Obama/McCain Must/Can't/Should/Shouldn't do to Fix the Country," are relevant, and that one or two suggestions here and there possibly will resonate with somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who is the next president. In this scenario, the Wired list disappoints, not because it lacks innovation, but because it possesses a big-government mentality.

The ideas worth keeping, such as making 401k plans more difficult to opt out of than into and relaxing trade restrictions, could be realized most efficiently through government inaction. Using genome studies and investing more in the prevention of—rather than responses to—future epidemics are wothwhile preventative health measures in and of themselves, but the former, if implemented with no other healthcare reforms, could deny healthcare access to the unknown number of Americans with genetic ticking bombs; while the latter idea could devolve into one more reason to impede immigration.

And some of the ideas, like investing more money in NASA and redesigning entire cities "from scratch" (Le Corbusier lives!), are just plain dumb. But don't take my word for it, check out the complete list here, and use the thread for neas and yeas (or whoos! and boos). Bonus points will be awarded to the commenters who come up with the most totalitarian and the freest First 100 Days agendas.

For my totalitarian list, I'm going to go with things that I think all Americans can get behind.

1. Eliminate all that nasty pork spending and corporate welfare except to the really really critical industries of the country, which includes mine.
2. Make everybody else eat healthy foods and stop the nasty habits that I don't have.
3. Create more public transit by taxing the evil car companies so that other people can ride public transit and the roads are less crowded for me, and give me a tax break for my hybrid because I need it and it's beneficial and stuff
4. Tax breaks on efficient appliances that don't reduce the effectiveness of the appliance, and mandates to use efficient appliances that are absolute pieces of crap (see: CFLs), only have special exceptions for me, and handicapped people.
5. Eliminate the federal income tax for everyone making the same amount of money as me and less. All those other people are just greedy bastards who should pay their fair share.
6. Free health care - duh.

I agree that most of them are silly. But I found the Montgomery McFate (weirdest name ever) about using anthropolgoy for military planning article intriguing. And something the President actually may have some power to do as opposed to "redesidning our cities."

Let's get to a more serious "to do" list for someone who's *serious* about stamping out the remnants of freedom in the USA:

Nationalize Blockbuster's and Netflix - they're unfair competition for public libraries.

Make short-sellers *really* shorter by cutting off their heads.

New national anthem: The Red Flag.

New national flag, too.

Midnight paramilitary no-knock police raids on everyone with an outstanding traffic warrant, or anyone who lives in a similar-looking house.

Tackle obesity with a program of compulsory exercise: Americans will have to join the military and keep in shape by invading at least one country per month.

Make it legal for parents to kill their children up to age three. Why should the government interfere in such personal decisions?

Everyone 18-21 can't drink anyway, so we'll call them up for national service. Military, AmeriCorps, restart the CCC and WPA, it doesn't matter what the goal is. Also, every wall street executive gets the call. Start a new program where they can get two weeks training as physician assistants, so we can solve the health care crisis in one swoop too.

Call for congress to assemble. Announce we don't do anything else (excepting bathroom breaks every three hours) until I've read every single word of the US Code and every standing treaty out loud, you know, to understand where we've come from before we can move forward. Break out the Red Bull.

If Obama wins,

1. Combine the major networks, print newspapers, and cable news networks, sans FOX which will be closed down under the fairness doctrine and hate speech laws, into the ministry of truth. It will be the biggest blow for honesty in reporting and government ever struck

2. All children who attend public schools from 6th grade and up will be expected to report of at least 100 hours per year of community service lead by selected leftist ideologues with government mandated designed curriculums to instill proper political consciousness. All those who don't show up or don't toe the line, will be declared truent and committed to the juvenile authorities. Any parents who fail to ensure their children's attendance will be arrested and charged with child neglect.

3. The FEC will apply all McCain Feingold laws to blogs and the internet. The FEC will have the freedom to prosecute anyone who puts a opinion on the internet without registering as a campaign contributor to the proper authorities. Any one who produced more than $1,000 worth of in-kind blogging contributions to a political campaign will be prosecuted. All "public interest groups" as determined by the FEC, such as green and labor groups, will be exempt from prosecution.

4. The fairness doctrine will be enforced against all forms of broadcast media with the understanding that public interest groups such as the Sierra Club, ACLU, Unions and the like are not political in nature and do not require any balancing of opinion. Only purely political opinions expressed by talk show hosts or advocacy groups such as the NRA or CATO will be subject to balancing programming.

Obama said the other day that the American people were good people but they "read the wrong books and listened to the wrong talk shows". When you think about it, why couldn't he do any of the above, sans the first one which would be unnecessary anyway? It is not like anyone in the media is going to call him to account on it or even bother to publicize what is going on. Yeah, judges could stop him, but you have to find the right judge and if you have the media behind you 100%, you can just ignore what the judge tells you. How many divisions does the Supreme Court have?

One last thing, if you think the media being in the tank for you isn't a very valuable weapon look no further than the drug war. If 30 years ago you told me that in 2008 militarized SWAT teams would routinely break into people's houses looking for drugs on dubious pretenses and routinely kill or injure innocent people, I would have told you you were nuts. Yet, today that is exactly what is going on. How does it happen? A big part of it is the media refuses to report about it and no one who doesn't read fringe publications like Reason knows its going on. When the media becomes an organ of the government and takes it upon itself to decide what should and should not be reported, it is time to be very scared.

For a supposedly smart guy that supposedly knows a lot about international stuff, Parag Khanna is pretty clueless. He says it's lunacy that our oil comes from across the world and we should get more oil from Mexico and Canada. I agree, except that we're already doing that. We get about 16% of imports from the Gulf and 30% from our neighbors. He also falls into the China is more important than India trap. China is growing faster, but they're doing it with an early 20th century economy rather than India which is doing it with knowledge workers and innovation. The latter grows much faster than the former. He also says that India is only 2% of the world economy. WTF!? They're #4 in the world in total GDP (PPP) and have 5% of total global GDP.

I've been harping on the Censor around these parts for years. Working out the details of the Censorial Branch would be the real trick, but I think the concept is sound. We obviously lack adequate checks on federal power, and the level of personal corruption seems to be growing. The biggest dilemma is how to separate its profound removal powers from partisan tit for tat.

1) Universal health care. Criminalize paying out of pocket. Govt determines who gets what care and when and by whom (e.g. fatties don't get their hip replacements until they shed weight, a la Britian).

2) What the guy above said on national service. After all, it's not your life to live, its our free / reduced priced labor to exploit.

3) Close down all private and home schools. After all, unless you're a government approved teacher, you don't know jack. Besides, how can we 'protect' the kids if they're not in school 8 hours a day for us to monitor. Ban kids bringing their own food to school, so they can eat 'healthy' cafeteria food. Encourage kids to rat out their parents for anything the 'health' nannies can think of. Dumb down the curriculum so much, that most people are innumerate, barely literate and don't understand the scientific process.

4) Close down all fast food. National ban on trans-fats, fois gras, etc. Mandate minimum organic content in all processed foods. Hell, ban processes foods. Mandate 'slow food'.

5) Ban all tobacco. After all, that would conflict with (1).

6) Make the stupidly complex tax code even more so with a slew of credits, exclusions, etc. to 'help the little guy'. In the process, it's so damn complex, that everyone is guilty of a criminal offense of filing a false tax return. Prosecute only those that bitch too much about any of your policies. Ratchet up the AMT, since after all, those 'rich' folks that pay most of the income tax aren't paying their fair share. Death tax to 95% for all estates over 500,000.

7) Cap and trade. Of course, only your buddies will get 'credits', which they will sell to the little guy who wants to keep his house warm and funnel back millions to your campaign or presidential library fund.

8) What was said above on the fairness doctrine. Apply it to cable and the web as well.

9) "Reinterpert" the recent 2nd ammendment case. After all, those little, angry people with guns are awfully dangerous.

10) Eliminate juries since they get the 'wrong' result too often. Must not have those pesky citizens checking our government power.

11) Search warrant? We don't need no stinkin' search warrant. Especially when it comes to enforcing 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9. After all, it's 'for the children' or the environment or your own health.

12) Ban (and confiscate the assets of) all 401k, 403b, IRAs, Roth's, private pensions, etc. It's not fair that some folks retire better off than others. Use the funds to 'make social security and medicare secure'. Must not let the foolish ant starve while the thrifty grasshopper is warm and well fed.

13) Reinstate the "excess profits tax" from the Truman era. Come on now - we all know the oil companies are making too much money.

14) Related to 13 - Oh heck, why not just nationalize them (all 'too sucessful' companies). We've already nationalized the shitty companies (fannie, freddie, AIG, etc) - we may as well get some good ones as well.

1. Wake up, browse web. Read Reason, make a few snarky comments, get dressed.

2. Have a press conference detailing what isn't going to be done by this administration.

3. Repeal the PATRIOT act.

4. Disband the Office of Homeland Security.

5. Give the TSA two months to privatize airport security.

6. Cut off any existing funding for bailouts which have occurred, are occurring or are about to occur, and reprivatize the financial industry.

7. Create a national holiday based around the word "No".

The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.
Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials,they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.

This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.

This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!

Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!

****WHEN THE US INNOCENT WERE ABANDONED BY THE GUILTY ****
The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.

Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials,they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.

This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.

This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!

Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus with our US FEDERAL COURTS and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!

For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.

It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayers $$.

This FACADE and HORROR of our Federal Appeal proce$$ is not worthy of the Greatest Country In The World!
