Next week the physicists at the European
Center for Nuclear Research are scheduled to switch on a 17-mile
particle accelerator lying beneath the border of France and
Switzerland. According to a number of concerned scientists, this
act could result in nothing less than the destruction of the
planet. Science Correspondent Ronald Bailey explains why there's
