In the
Washington Times, Andrew Breitbart notes that Hollywood
types are not quite as repellent in this election
as they seemed in 2004:
Gone is Cindy Sheehan and her tone-deaf Hollywood enablers. Gone is Michael Moore and his pre-ordained Oscar acceptance speech. Gone is Janeane Garofalo. (Is she OK? Can someone check her apartment?)
Gone, perhaps, is the losing Democratic Party strategy from hell.
Sen. Barack Obama is a casting agent's dream and his narrative is inspiring. He's the perfect age for a new Camelot. He's tall and fit—his jogging entrance at the debate at the celeb-laden Kodak Theater last January even wowed tense supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. He talks better than most of his peers in the Senate. And his nuclear family takes the perfect picture....
Mrs. Clinton never recovered from the [David] Geffen and [Oprah] Winfrey defections—as the floodgates of talent came rushing to Mr. Obama's side. Twenty-three-year-old actress Scarlett Johannson even bragged about being e-mail buddies with Mr. Obama.
"My heart belongs to Barack," Miss Johannson declared. (JFK and Mr. Clinton would have e-mailed her back, too.)
Other starlets, like Kirsten Dunst and George Clooney, also professed their crushes. "He walks into your world, and he takes your breath away," Mr. Clooney cooed.
Even the children of stars are in the mood. Sarah Jessica Parker of "Sex and the City" says her 5-year-old son is "very into Barack Obama...on his own."
Inspired viral videos made on the cheap by the likes of the hip-hop artist will.i.am of the Black-Eyed Peas convey a utopian future with Mr. Obama at the helm. (Could Republicans create something that inspiring—even with an unlimited budget?)
Yet with almost all cultural indicators pointing towards an Obama presidency, most polls show Sen. John McCain within reach....
So far, Hollywood has played this election remarkably cool, but that is based wholly on the presumption that Mr. Obama will win big.
If the race stays close or Mr. McCain pulls ahead, expect a trip to the Hollywood Election Wayback Machine, 2004 Edition, and the Democratic Party strategy from hell.

Breitbart is a consummate nimrod, but I have to agree that when
Hollywood goes full court press for a candidate, it's a disaster
for that candidate.
Also, Hollywood Obama-cultism is even creepier than regular
Obama-cultism.
"He walks into your world, and he takes your breath away," Mr.
Clooney cooed.
(gag) I hope new South Parks come out soon, because
they're going to have plenty of material.
He talks better than most of his peers in
the Senate.
Isn't there a more articulate way to say
that?
Parenthetically, I'm still bothered that everyone says "folks" now,
instead of "people". "Folks" sounds like such a hillbilly word to
me.
How is it that the knuckleheads on the right - Falwell,
Robertson, Limbaugh, etc - have to be courted or placated to in
order to even get a shot on the Republican side, but if the lefties
throw their support behind somebody, it's the kiss of death?
Anyone else see the disconnect here?
It's a 'nukular family'. Nuklear has to do with bombs.
Nucleus is Latin or Greek and has nothing to do with Obama, you
ignorant person.
His spectacular European trip seems to have backfired, too,
making Mr. Obama look like a narcissistic elitist.
Yeah, maybe a little bit. But I didn't see that big a deal with his
week in Europe. Given the tumultuous ride with Europe we had with
Iraq - as well as the current 80s style military flexing by Russia
- it can't hurt to try to re-strengthen bonds with the Europeans on
some diplomatic levels.
Anyone else see the disconnect here?
What are you trying to say here? People absolutely unconnected with
politics should be less important than vicious hate-spewing
leeches?
You're crazy. And you're interfering with the five minutes hate
upon Hollywood; that'll be Room 101 for you, son!
I'm continually amazed that people care what Hollywood or right-wing-nutjob morons think just because they're famous morons.
If Bush were somehow running for a third-term, we'd see the
Sheehan/Moore/MoveOn axis in full strength. Not that there's any
love for McCain among that lot, but the simple notion of W being
out by January is enough to quell some of the fire-breathing we saw
in '04.
Not to mention that the housing market and energy prices, and not
Iraq, have been the dominant headlines over the past several
months. While these are still political hot buttons, they don't
carry the same heated fervor as invading a sovereign country
does.
Oh no, not Hollywood. There goes the industry. Politics are
about corruption and greed. So sad.

He's tall and fit-
Does this count as the latest 'racial slur' against Sen.
Obama?
BTW, I just heard on the radio, FWIW, that Ms. Sheehan is
officially challenging Ms. Pelosi for her seat in the US House of
Representatives.
Ms. Sheehan is officially challenging Ms. Pelosi for her
seat in the US House of Representatives.
...and the moisturizer manufacturers of the world wept with
joy.
And you're interfering with the five minutes hate upon
Hollywood; that'll be Room 101 for you, son!
Ahh...the room where a caged Kevin Federline gnaws on your face.
K-Fed hungry!
Political analysis based on the theory that the Democrats were a
massive failure in 2004 is going to be tripe.
John Kerry came within 2.5 points of unseating an incumbent
president during wartime. No one has even accomplished that; no one
even came close to doing as well as Kerry. The Democrats did very
well; they were just playing with the deck stacked against them,
like the Republicans in 1944.
In 2007, the Patriots were routinely winning games with scores like
56-10. The Giants tried a certain game plan in the last week of the
season, and while they lost, they came a lot closer than most of
the Patriots' previous opponents. If the only question is, did they
win or lose, then you could conclude that they had a lousy game
plan and inferior personnel - but then, you'd probably conclude
that they didn't have a change using a similar game plan in the
Superbowl.
Don't worry, we'll give you lesser people until Memorial Day to figure out that Obama is the Second Coming. If McCain is still within striking distance by that point, expect a lot of shrill for the home stretch.
joe: fair point.
Interesting: Janeane Garafalo is starring in the new season of
24.
Yeah. I never understood the large quantities of hate directed
towards Ms. Garofalo. Yeah, she's a leftist, and she dares to open
her mouth about it. So what? I always thought she was kinda cute in
that spunky college-girl sort of way.
Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney are a lot more popular with people than Jenine Garafalo and Michael Moore. Also, it is how someone expresses their support. If the support is expressed positively, as in "I like this guy" rather than negatively, as in "the other guy is evil incarnate and I am moving to Canada if he wins", the support goes a lot farther with people and doesn't alienate people. Basically, Obama has more popular people saying less offensive things in support of him than Kerry did. If I were the Republicans, I would be secretly bank rolling Michael Moore to make some horrible documentary this fall.
Hey Ultimate-Anonymity guy,
I believe I've said this before, but I'll say it again.
Fuck you and stop spamming every thread.
Toodles!
I never understood the large quantities of hate directed towards Ms. Garofalo.
Reality Bites. Although I never found her particularly
attractive (and even less so now that she's covered in tattoos,)
much of the general enmity against her is a long-term backlash
against that movie. Her long association with Ben Stiller (who many
consider as ass-bag) doesn't help.
If it was because she was a loud-mouth leftist, no Hollywood
actress would be considered attractive.
"Yeah. I never understood the large quantities of hate directed
towards Ms. Garofalo. Yeah, she's a leftist, and she dares to open
her mouth about it. So what? I always thought she was kinda cute in
that spunky college-girl sort of way."
That look worked for me to when she was in her 20s. But the tattoos
and the aging has really reduced her attractiveness. I don't think
she is a bad actress either. Also, she makes a lot of good points
about the requirement that leading women starve themselves to death
to maintain good standing in Hollywood.
I don't blame her for being a leftist. It is a free country. But,
around 2003 or so, she stopped being funny and became just a
leftist. That was all I ever saw her talk about.
Fuck you and stop spamming every thread.
For the love of FSM, this. The guy has never said anything worthwhile here.
I never understood the large quantities of hate directed towards Ms. Garofalo.
She reminds people of Europeans. And not the good, hot Russian chicks. But a French/German type of chick who doesn't shave their legs.
"large quantities of hate directed towards Ms. Garofalo"
I thought it had something to do with the large quantities of hate
she directs at everyone else. Really her and a few other of her
castmates from those seasons of SNL are such insufferable
bores.
Janeane Garafalo is starring in the new season of
24.
Further proof she hates America.
I never understood the large quantities of hate directed
towards Ms. Garofalo.
Mrs. Garofalo has directed a lot of hate towards others for most of
her career; her whole routine was "I'm smart, funny, and moderately
cute but the guys all want Uma Thurman instead of me".
First of all, that gets old fast. Secondly, it gets real old when
the person saying it ceases to be moderately cute. Thirdly, when
the hate becomes really intense, it ceases to be anything except
annoying.
"My heart belongs to Barack?"
I hope for his sake this isn't another John Edwards situation.
Because unlike Edward's wife I'm pretty sure Michelle would do a
Jessie Jackson and cut his nuts off.
people care what Hollywood or right-wing-nutjob morons think
just because they're famous morons
Morons love company.
Epi,
There is a certain "can someone just get this woman laid" quality
to her routines.
First of all, that gets old fast. Secondly, it gets real old
when the person saying it ceases to be moderately cute. Thirdly,
when the hate becomes really intense, it ceases to be anything
except annoying.
That's all well-and-good, but it's not like you don't see Hollywood
types coming around the corner. Avoid as necessary.
I reserve my very rare hate for the unavoidable idiots among us,
none of which work in Hollywood.
I never understood the large quantities of hate directed
towards Ms. Garofalo.
She was lously and publically against the war in 2002, appearing
throughout the media to argue that the WMD case hadn't been proven,
that there was no Saddam connection to 9/11, and that an invasion
of Iraq would bog down in an occupation.
So, hatesssss the Garofalo we doessssssss.
none of which work in Hollywood
Michael Bay works in Hollywood. See how easy it is to refute
you?
So, hatesssss the Garofalo we doessssssss.
That explains the Guy Montags of the world, but not the Episiarchs.
That's why I asked.
Michael Bay works in Hollywood. See how easy it is to refute
you?
You don't avoid Michael Bay? I find him simple to dodge. His films
are so vapid they generate an event horizon from which intelligent
commentary *cannot escape* that you can see from a kilometer
away.
"John-
Kathy Griffin has that "quality" times 100."
No kidding. Someone needs to explain to Griffin that if she would
both associating with straight men, her sex life might improve.
So, hatesssss the Garofalo we doessssssss.
Way to not read the thread and go for the partisan jab, joe.
you're as bad as a Republican who talks about "hating us for our
freedoms".
Does this count as the latest 'racial slur' against Sen.
Obama?
I continuously fought joe when he would assert that criticism "X"
of Obama was being employed as a covert way to communicate racist
themes to the electorate.
Real flame wars. Lots of use of the word "cunt". Sputtering
denunciations of joe and his joeitude.
But the release of the Mark Penn memos makes it apparent that the
Clinton campaign, at least, was in fact trying to launch attacks on
Obama that would take advantage of low-level racism without being
overtly racist in themselves. For once the so-called "code words"
were, in fact, intended to be code words.
If the Clinton campaign did it, how much more likely is it that the
McCain campaign is doing it?
The Penn memos dramatically enhance the credibility of Obama
supporters' paranoia about "subliminal racism" in anti-Obama
campaign material of all kinds.
No kidding. Someone needs to explain to Griffin that if she
would both associating with straight men, her sex life might
improve.
The funny thing is that gay men have a reputation for being
culturally hip trend-setters on the cutting edge of the next big
thing at all times.
But despite this reputation, when they embrace a pop culture figure
as an icon, they seem to hold on to that icon well past its sell-by
date. Griffin's routine is old and worn out, everything about
Madonna is worn out, etc.
This is an odd paradox to me.
You don't avoid Michael Bay? I find him simple to dodge. His
films are so vapid they generate an event horizon from which
intelligent commentary *cannot escape* that you can see from a
kilometer away.
I watched 30 minutes of Pearl Harbor, like a fool. You
can't get rid of the hate that generates.
Fluffy,
See Garlin, Judy for an even better example of that. Gay men love
kitsch. I don't really know why but they do. I think that explains
why they have a special love for evelvating worn out pop culture
figures to icon status.
Elemenope,
That explains the Guy Montags of the world, but not the
Episiarchs. That's why I asked.
Because there was a campaign of hate directed at her by the Montags
of the world, and the Episiarchs are suckers for any campaign of
hate directed at a political figure, even when it is being carried
out by other political figures.
Way to not read the thread and go for the partisan jab,
joe.
you're as bad as a Republican who talks about "hating us for our
freedoms".
Don't worry, N00b. At a certain point, after a certain number of
thrashings, you too will learn that it's a bad idea to assume that
I'm misunderstanding the point and writing something out of
ignorance when you don't immediately follow my line of thought.
One other thing Fluffy, "tall and fit" is definitly code for "dumb and athletic" and a racial slur when speaking about Obama. ;-)
Being a black guy in America cures you of paranoia permanently,
because *they ARE out to get you*.
Dog-whistle politics make me want to start shooting folk, and I'm a
non-violent person by nature.
Then again, there was this story about a boy and a wolf, so Fluffy
your protestations were not without merit at the time.
"Because there was a campaign of hate directed at her by the
Montags of the world,"
Oh please. Just like the campaingn of hate directed at Mel Gibson
or Rush Limbaugh? Give me a break. Criticism is not hate. If
someoen wants to say something political, then they better be ready
to take criticism from the other side. It is a free country.
Garafalo can say what she thinks and Montag can say she is an idiot
and refuse to see her movies. It is called free expression Joe.
I watched 30 minutes of Pearl Harbor, like a fool. You can't
get rid of the hate that generates.
I've found drugs to be a palliative for all of life's ills. Except
the real ones, of course.
A little Pearl Harbor in your craw can be exorcised by a
little judicious alcohol. Apply immediately after viewing, rinse,
repeat as necessary.
and the Episiarchs are suckers for any campaign of hate
directed at a political figure, even when it is being carried out
by other political figures
It seems joe is reading minds again. I guess he took some digital
drugs.
I've seen a number of Garofalo's movies, joe, and kind of liked
some of the romantic comedies like The Matchmaker and
The Truth About Cats & Dogs (NutraSweet is 100% right
about Reality Bites, though). But she has grown older and
very bitter and hateful, and what charm she had is gone.
It has nothing to do with campaigns of hate (other than her own),
but I'm glad to see that you are projecting your own partisan
idiocy true to form. I'd say "don't ever change", joe, but since
you're incapable of it, why bother?
John --
Problem is, someone forgot at home the handy-dandy guide that
differentiates "political criticism" from "misogynistic hating".
The whole right-wing, in fact.
Putting oneself out there as a political critic should garner
*political criticism*. It is not an excuse or a cover for anything
else more base and/or sinister.
More Angry and Optimistic,
Seriously, it isn't remotely difficult to follow the logic all the
way from "there was a campaign to denounce Garofalo" to "therefore
people hate her," but since you thought for a second I wrote
something that didn't make sense, you didn't bother to think for,
oh, a whole second and a half to figure out what I meant, you just
shouted "Aha!" and wrote a comment about how stupid I was.
Here's a head's up: you're going into what's called a Corning
Spiral.
You hatesssssss the joe. You pick a fight with the joe. You get
your ass kicked by the joe. You hates the joe even more. You pick
even more fights with the joe, leaping on anything that looks like
you might be able to make the joe look bad. Your judgement suffers,
as the possibility of scoring a point against me causes you to skip
over critical thinking in your eagerness to write how stupid I am
whenever you get a fleeting impression that I might have made a
misstatement or bad argument. You get your ass kicked by the joe
even more, because now you're writing stupid shit. You hates the
joe even more. And onward and onward, until you're writing what a
fucking moron I am for saying that northern blacks were part of the
New Deal coalition.
Seriously. Ease up.
A little Pearl Harbor in your craw can be exorcised by a
little judicious alcohol.
I was already drinking and it didn't help! Have you seen
any of this movie? At least Battlefield Earth is terrible
in an entertaining way.
Why all of the heaping of hate accusations related to Ms.
Garafalo and how the hell did I get involved in it?
If someone has an actual link to anything I actually said bad about
her, please produce it.
Oh, and if it is produced by one of the trolls I ignore here,
please someone like John quote it, like you did with the pathetic
nonsense that you countered at 11:05 am on this thread.
Episiarch-
Percocet helps with Pearl Harbor. Followed by a shot of Nyquil.
Anything else just doesn't do it.
Just like the campaingn of hate directed at Mel Gibson or
Rush Limbaugh?
Were either of them frequently accused of treason during
wartime?
Why, the answer to that question is "No."
If the Fox News idiots want to constantly launch base personal
attacks in place of responding to people's actual arguments, that's
their right, but they should be ready for normal people to take
exception to that and denounce it. It's called free expression.
how the hell did I get involved in it?
Give yourself a pat on the back, Guy- you're a meme.
Go practice "walking against the wind".
You should be proud, you two!
Your shticks are so predictable, you've become archetypes: the
brainless wingnut, and the faux-sophisticate poseur who thinks
being equally gullible to everyone's negative talking points is a
form of skepticism.
"Problem is, someone forgot at home the handy-dandy guide that
differentiates "political criticism" from "misogynistic hating".
The whole right-wing, in fact."
Oh mean like drawing Condi Rice with big lips and talking about
Hillary Clinton as a "stalker girlfriend"? You mean that kind of
mysogynistic hate? Oh I forgot that is all from the left so it
can't by mysogynistic hate. I forgot my handy dandy, "nothing on
the left is ever wrong and everything on the right is always hate
speech" guide.
joe, three points:
A. I've never seen someone so narcisstic as you. You really wrote
three paragraphs up there fantasizing that I'm all "spun-up Corning
style about you". Hint: I just don't like you and you never change
your spiel. And I'm tired of it.
B. I don't "get my ass kicked" by you. Only a true-blue loser like
yourself would spring a chubby about "kicking someone's ass" on a
blog's comments. Get a clue.
C. I'm not a n00b, but if you had been paying attention you would
know that.
I love how far I am in Guy's head.
I love how far you are up your own ass; keep pushing, until you
disappear completely.
I was already drinking and it didn't help! Have you seen any
of this movie? At least Battlefield Earth is terrible in an
entertaining way.
I was not so foolish. Dude, you saw a poster with Ben Affleck *and*
Michael Bay featured prominently and you fucking fell for it?
Why all of the heaping of hate accusations related to Ms.
Garafalo and how the hell did I get involved in it?
If someone has an actual link to anything I actually said bad about
her, please produce it.
Why bother? You seem to desire to exist in a different realm of
digital existence than your detractors. Across that border all
necessity to substantiate hate against you is obviated. Join the
realm of your "lessers" and you will be fought fairly.
Until then you will just be the convenient stand-in for "Idiot
Republican".
Joe,
Some day there will be a better world and anyone who disagrees with
you will be sent to a re-education camp as punishment for their
hate speech. Until then, you and Jennine are just going to have to
live with people holding the wrong views. Further, both Garafalo
and Moore openly hoped the US would lose in Iraq. If that is not
treason what is? Hoping for a "1000 Mogadeshus" is called being on
the other side.
This is the best celeb worship of Obama EVER, for all time, and
I really wish the McCain people would put it in an ad, or at least
that Matt and Trey would devote an episode to it:
Why Obama is like a Desert Lover
My musician friends and I are writing songs to inspire people
and couples all over America are making love again and shouting
"yes we can" as they climax!
I knew Bush was the most powerfully evil man in history, but I had
no idea he had the power to erase the sex drives of couples all
over America.
There is a difference between principled disagreement, and fear
of a tragedy and rooting for more death.
If you're anti-war, its best to say "I really don't want to go in
because this could spin out of control, but thats not what I
want to happen."
Probably 90% of people against the Iraq War (myself included)
shared this view. Its the assholes from ANSWER and Michael Moore
that hijacked it.
"My musician friends and I are writing songs to inspire people
and couples all over America are making love again and shouting
"yes we can" as they climax!"
Ewww. I can't believe the choice is between a cult leader and
General Turgidson.
I was not so foolish. Dude, you saw a poster with Ben
Affleck *and* Michael Bay featured prominently and you fucking fell
for it?
I saw a poster with Kate Beckinsale on it. Fag.
Alright who posted as "[Name Sanitized to protect Guy's Sensitive Pleasure Centers]"? Because thats pretty funny.
Shorter John:
joe is just whining and making up the idea that Garofalo has been
dragged through the mud, which she totally deserved, because she
really is a traitor.
Alright who posted as "[Name Sanitized to protect Guy's
Sensitive Pleasure Centers]"? Because thats pretty
funny.
I'll cop to it. I popped him like a pinata a few weeks back and
he's never forgiven me.
"If you're anti-war, its best to say "I really don't want to go
in because this could spin out of control, but thats not what I
want to happen."
Exactly. This is a terrible idea and a tragedy but I hope I am
wrong and it turns out well or at least we get out ASAP is a
legitimate position. I hope we lose and millions die so that the US
is taught a lesson is not. And you are right, the wackos don't do
the reasonalbe people on their side any favors.
I saw a poster with Kate Beckinsale on it. Fag.
Anyone who is hotter as a no-talent ass-clown vampire with a jones
for Scott Speedman cannot move me or my loins.
Standards, dude.
Yes Joe. Jennine and the Dixie Chicks. They are real political martyrs. Right up there with Sokerov and Socrates. Can people be anymore self absorbed? "Someone on talk radio called me a traitor and a bunch of people I hate in the midwest and South won't buy my music or go see my movies, this is terrible." If people like Garafelo had an ounce of integrity and really were hurt because of their views, they would wear that fact like a badge of honor instead of whining about it all the time.
what if you think vampires are hot? even the no-talent kind have those cute little fangs...
I hope we lose and millions die is a gross
misrepresentation of Garofalo's argument.
Gee, I wonder why people who are subject to media campaigns
accusing them of genocide could possibly object?
first, that has to be the single most attractive photo of
Jeanene G I've seen.
second "If the Clinton campaign did it, how much more likely is it
that the McCain campaign is doing it?" a billionty percent? because
the clintons would never stoop so low, even though they did.
Mccain's worse!!!11!!
Anyone who is hotter as a no-talent ass-clown vampire with a
jones for Scott Speedman cannot move me or my loins.
Standards, dude.
I don't really know what to say to this. Let me try rephrasing
it:
Elisha Cuthbert is hotter as a no-talent ass-clown porn star with a
jones for Emile Hirsch and cannot move you or your loins.
Is this really the position you want to stake out?
Hint: I just don't like you and you never change your spiel.
And I'm tired of it.
Yes, and you aren't the first, and you certainly won't be the last.
That's why I'm able to peg you so well.
joe, I don't want you any where near "pegging" me. and your total ability to delude yourself into some kind of Super-Internet War Hero and Psychic ("I know your kinds, son! I been in these here Internet trenches 'fore you was born!") is. fucking. pathetic.
joe,
You aren't making up the idea that she is hated more because of her
talk show / politics.
The part you made up is the implication that she was somehow
America's Sweetheart until she decided to pipe up about the war in
2002. She was fairly unpopular long before that, with a lackluster
SNL run, a lukewarm box office, and a stand-up routine based
simultaneously on self-loathing and lashing out at people who don't
like her.
She has always courted a niche market of "not-conventionally-pretty
loud mouth feminists," and absolutely none of that audience
suddenly hates her. Garafalo is just more well-known at this point
to people who wouldn't have liked her anyway. I doubt she thinks
it's much of a loss and seems the type to get off on being hated by
people who she's thinks are idiots.
P Brooks | August 12, 2008, 11:21am |,
I love how far I am in Guy's head.
I love how far you are up your own ass; keep pushing, until you
disappear completely.
ROFL, you did not even need to post the handle for me to guess
which nutjob that was.
Some attention seekers just can not stand being ignored by anybody
it seems. Lemmeguess, 'he' thought some comment by me on this
thread had something to do with 'him'?
LOL!
Fluffy,
You show yourself to be a big person by admitting that.
If the Clinton campaign did it, how much more likely is it that
the McCain campaign is doing it?
I'll just note that, according to these memos, the Clinton campaign
DIDN'T adopt that strategy. Penn argued for it, and people
connected with the campaign certainly did go off on their own, but
there were no ad campaigns, no organized talking talks points,
making the "unAmerican foreigner" point by the Hillary campaign.
They went for "elitist big-city leftist," but not "foreign
un-American."
As opposed to the McCain campaign.
"Gee, I wonder why people who are subject to media campaigns
accusing them of genocide could possibly object?"
They can object all they want. It is a free country. I can say,
"you suck I won't see your movies". They can say "good ridence I
don't want your money". That is how it is supposed to work. How
they want it to work is they can say anything they want no matter
how offensive and if anyone criticizes them, they whine about being
dragged through the mud. If Garafelo got up and said that she
didn't care what people thought she was speaking her conscience, I
would have to respect her. It is the whinning like you are doing
that makes her into a fraud.
ACtually, maybe Garafelo has said that. It is the Dixie Chicks who whinned. I should conflate their's and your whining with Garafelo. Moreover, as Sugar Free points out above, Garafelo was on her way out of Hollywood by 2002 anyway. If anything being against the war has saved her career by keeping her in the limelight.
Optimist,
I'm done with you, sugar. Your money's on the dresser.
SugarFree,
The part you made up is the implication that she was somehow
America's Sweetheart until she decided to pipe up about the war in
2002. I don't recall making that implication. I just commented
that she was the target of a large, coordinated media campaign
surrounding her anti-war media profile in 2002, and that it led a
lot of people to hate her.
Some attention seekers just can not stand being ignored by
anybody it seems. Hey, man, I drive a car with poor gas
mileage! I counterprotest other people protests! Pay attention to
me! Pay attention to me! Boy, you've got that one right, Guy.
It is the whinning like you are doing that makes her into a
fraud.
Just my take, but I find these whiners to be revealing themselves
for what they really are, but fraud does not seem to be the correct
word. Well, maybe too strong of a word for juvenile, self-centered
folk who expect a free ride.
I would guess that a true fraud would do their best not to reveal
it. Like Ralph Nader.
If the race stays close or Mr. McCain pulls ahead, expect a
trip to the Hollywood Election Wayback Machine, 2004 Edition, and
the Democratic Party strategy from hell.
I think Obama is astute enough to tell Hollywood to STFU. When he
visited Motown
somebody was notably absent for the campaign event at he Joe
Louis Arena. He'll try to get those know nothing dipshits in LaLa
Land to step back as well.
Actually, NutraSweet, the part joe made up was that I somehow gave a shit about "campaigns of hate" against her. But he decided not to respond to my reaction to that.
John, you ignorant ass, you yourself, personally, accused
Garofalo of wanting millions of people to die, and now you're
pretending that all anyone ever did was disagree with her policy
stance.
Speaking of which, you disreputable hack, are you ready to
apologize for calling me "a longtime supporter and defender of
Saddam Hussein" yet?
Don't lecture the civilized people of this country about the proper
scope of political disagreement and how to respond to it, you
hypocrite.
Bull shit the Clinton campaign didn't use that strategy! That's exactly what they did from March to late May.
joe is in the rare form of simultaneously lying, being profane
and being willfully blind when he mal-attributes a sentiment or
point to someone (like Episiarch).
I just commented that she was the target of a large,
coordinated media campaign surrounding her anti-war media profile
in 2002
you're missing the oh-so-relevant fact that she
reveled in the attention.
Bull shit the Clinton campaign didn't use that strategy!
That's exactly what they did from March to late May.
That is an awful strategerie that those evil Conservative
infiltrators must have forced them to use.
Question for any lurking Rabbis:
Is it still considered lashon ha'ra if the guy you are
attempting to disparage can't hear you only because he's shoved two
big wads of digital wax into his ears?
Elisha Cuthbert is hotter as a no-talent ass-clown porn star
with a jones for Emile Hirsch and cannot move you or your
loins.
Is this really the position you want to stake out?
I suppose so. Lesbians just represent ass I can never have, and for
me no-talent ass-clownery is a bigger turn off than anything
physical short of visible syphilitic lesions.
joe,
I don't recall making that implication. I just commented that
she was the target of a large, coordinated media campaign
surrounding her anti-war media profile in 2002, and that it led a
lot of people to hate her.
Your comment about 2002 came at the end of a long string of
possible explanations of why people don't like her, as if this was
the real reason. A lot of people, evidently, took it that
way as well. (The source of the partisan crack, I believe.) It was
a commenting conjunction that made it look like you were spoiling
for an Iraq fight.
Anyway, the real reason she was never popular was because with her
depression she always came in below the Vicki
Mendoza Diagonal on the Hot/Crazy Scale.
Was there a campaign against Janine Garofalo? I've been ignoring
that no talent lass and all that is written about her for many
moons.
Did she say something stupid and controversial? Did somebody
disparage her? Was the dust-up worse than those other celebrity
political pontificators been in? Do people give a damn?
Really. I'm totally clueless here.
Lesbians just represent ass I can never have
Who is a lesbian?
no-talent ass-clownery is a bigger turn off than anything
physical short of visible syphilitic lesions
They're actors. Most of them are no-talent ass-clowns. Sometimes
they look really, really good and make entertaining film.
JsD,
I am with you on that, but somehow I have become the mythical
center of the imaginary campaign of hate against her. Or I am Epi's
assistant in the hallucinated lynching of her, or something like
that.
Lesbians just represent ass I can never have, and for me
no-talent ass-clownery is a bigger turn off than anything physical
short of visible syphilitic lesions.
I didn't get the Daily "Who is a Lesbian" E-mail...so did I miss
Cuthbert and/or Beckinsale traveling over to the Love that Dare Not
Speak Its Name?

Bull shit the Clinton campaign didn't use that strategy! That's
exactly what they did from March to late May.
According to the memos, Penn lost. I think there are a few
different things being lumped together in the word "that."
The "elitist" argument was what Hillary did from March to May - I'm
a regular small town gal, he's a big city elitist - but there's no
real racial, ethnic, or nativist subtext there. It was more or less
a more negative version of John Edwards' "I was born in a mill"
shtick.
Then, there's the "black guy can't win" argument, which they also
made. Jesse Jackson won South Carolina, all of that. But that was
an electability argument.
These Penn memos, however, weren't about that. They were about
something very specific - Obama's perceived foreignness. We can see
that in "the American president Americans have been waiting for."
We can see it in "Barack Obama gave a speech to 200,000 Germans,
but I'd rather hear the roar of Harleys." The Clinton campaign
steered away from that particular line of attack, which Penn was
trying to adopt.
SugarFree,
Your comment about 2002 came at the end of a long string of
possible explanations of why people don't like her, as if this was
the real reason. You have to admit, Garofalo-hate definitely
spiked in 2002, and not because of any movie or stand-up routine.
Do you disagree?
J sub D,
Back in ought-two, the fashion was a wear an onion on your
belt...and the only openly anti-war voices appearing with any
frequency on television were Hollywood actors. Garofalo was one of
the most prominent and effective, so she took her turn as Emmanuel
Goldstein.
See, that's my problem. When entertainers start talking politics, I exercise my astonishing ability to retune the receiver. It reduces aggravation.
There sure are a lot of people here obsessing over the public persona of an actress. Just out of curiosity, do you all also believe that Marion Morrison captured Iwo Jima single-handed?
Do you disagree?
Of course not. If I can have the luxury of quoting myself...
SugarFree | August 12, 2008, 11:46am | #
joe,
You aren't making up the idea that she is hated more because of her
talk show / politics.
I was just explaining why so many people think you said that she
was only disliked after 2002.
Elisha Cuthbert is hotter as a no-talent ass-clown porn star
with a jones for Emile Hirsch
Emile Hirsch perpetually looks like an ugly chick so...
p.s. I think Elisha is overrated on the boner scale. I'm hampered
in this regard by having a generally unfavorable view of
blondes.
See, that's my problem. When entertainers start talking
politics, I exercise my astonishing ability to retune the receiver.
It reduces aggravation.
My thing is I'll hear pretty much anyone out, regardless of their
vocation. I don't get people who don't, but people are their own
best judge of the relative value of their time.
About Pearl Harbor: I understand that many Americans, while watching the film, began to root for the Japanese.
See, that's my problem. When entertainers start talking
politics, I exercise my astonishing ability to retune the receiver.
It reduces aggravation.
Doing the same thing here with these 'entertainers' has the same
result ;)
Ken,
If we were discussing a movie where Garofalo was playing a strident
left-wing radio-talk show host as if that was was what Garofalo was
really like, then you might have a point.
Since we are talking about an actress who actually is a
strident left-wing radio-talk show host*, your comment misses the
point quite spectacularly.
*for the sake of argument
I think Elisha is overrated on the boner scale. I'm hampered
in this regard by having a generally unfavorable view of
blondes.
While I also generally prefer non-blonds myself, she got into
perfect shape for that stupid movie, which she is not normally in
judging from what I have seen of her on 24.
Somebody sure missed the point. Don't worry, SugarFree, I didn't really think you or the others my comment was addressed to were capable of understanding it. Or even of not contradicting themselves, apparently.
Ken: Jeanine is cute, but I need to pretend I don't care.
Saccharine: Ken is a funny little man.
Ken: No, I'm not! I swear!
------
Did I miss the point?
As opposed to the McCain campaign.
What has the McCain campaign done to paint Obama as "foreign
un-American"? I admit I'm not paying attention to the pointless
picayune soundbite details of this campaign, but I hadn't heard
that one.
C'mon, really. Can there be any question that the Clinton campaign
played far dirtier than McCain has (yet)?
Ken,
Let's see:
do you all also believe that Marion Morrison captured Iwo Jima
single-handed
do you all That's the Reason Hit n' Run comment board,
right?
also believe Probing our pathetic, non-Ken belief
structures.
that Marion Morrison John Wayne, for those beknighted
fools without Ken's mad IMDB skillz
captured Iwo Jima single-handed See, John Wayne was in a
movie about Iwo Jima, and dumbasses like us can't understand the
difference believe between movies and reality
Somebody sure missed the point. Don't worry, SugarFree, I didn't really think you or the others my comment was addressed to were capable of understanding it. Or even of not contradicting themselves, apparently.
I'm pretty sure your point was that you are a smug little fuck. I
doubt anyone on this board missed it.
Can there be any question that the Clinton campaign played
far dirtier than McCain has (yet)?
Yes.
(I'll leave the hard work to joe.)
"John, you ignorant ass, you yourself, personally, accused
Garofalo of wanting millions of people to die, and now you're
pretending that all anyone ever did was disagree with her policy
stance."
Joe you really are slow sometimes. Garafelo said what she said. She
said she wanted the US to lose. People have a right to critcize her
and dislike her for that. You certainly reserve the right to
dislike people who say things you find offensive. But of course no
one but you has that right. The rest of us are suppose to kiss her
aging tatooed butt her courage in saying horrible things. Why don't
you just be honest and say that no one but you has a right to an
opinion? Any other opinions are just "coordinated campaigns of
hate".
Gone is Janeane Garofalo. (Is she OK? Can someone check her
apartment?)
Garofalo has been locked out of her apartment for over a year now;
seems someone hid the key under a bar of soap...
Thank you, be here all week...
Nice weaseling there, John.
Any time you want to back up your accusation that Garofalo said "I
hope we lose and millions die," you go right ahead.
You see those funny little thingies around the statement that was
taken directly from your comment? Those are called quote marks.
Same as the ones around the phrase "longtime defender and supporter
of Saddam Hussein." You use those to show that that words you're
writing are a direct quote from what somebody else said.
Any time you want to put up a statement from Garofalo about hoping
millions die, you go on with your bad self. I won't hold my breath,
because you completely made that up to slime her - or rather, you
gullibly repeated what someone else made up to slime her, as you
always do.
You keep whining that I'm violating your rights by calling you out
on the dishonest, refuted, discredited, slandering asshole you
are.
Maybe no one will notice that I've got you dead to rights, and all
you can do is complain about how unfair it all is.

I love how far I am in Guy's head.
Dance, doggie, dance!
sv | August 12, 2008, 11:17am | #
gaaaaay...
Gay would be joe saying, "I love how far I am giving Guy
head."
Let's not conflate joe being joe with incipient gayness.
Back in the late nineties, Garafolo was generally the best thing in any movie she was in. Unfortunately, in a lot of them that wasn't difficult. She needed to be a lot more selective in her scripts.
Has anyone else noticed that the comment section here has become 4 or 5 of the same people carrying on multiple arguments at once? And then getting up tomorrow to do it all over again?
