W magazine writes about Arianna Huffington:
It wasn't that long ago that Huffington was variously dismissed as a social climber, "intellectual lap dancer" and political opportunist
Next up: W reveals how it wasn't that long ago that David Brock was dismissed as a partisan hack!
Bonus Arianna-ana: 1) Time's classic mid-'90s Margaret Carlson piece, "Should the Huffingtons Be Stopped?" 2) Watch ex-hubbie Michael call B.S. on her post-facto opposition to Proposition 187. 3) Jacob Sullum tells you what you really need to know about La Huffington's 2003 anti-SUV ads.

Wow! This is newsworthy.
I'm rendered speechless by its awesome relevance.
I find it strange that Huffington went from a conservative to the left wing of the Democratic Party in under the space of a decade.

Brock was dismissed as a partisan hack!
Not long ago? I thought that was the present.
Cesar,
That's nothing compared to Mitt Romney's Road To
Palmyra Damascus experience last year.
I remember in, I think, 94, at a California republican party convention in Sacramento when Mike Huffington was still hetero and was doing Arianna's bidding, he was after some conservative's house seat. The opposition hired actors to play Mike and Arianna in the lobby - he was doing acrobatics and they were both wearing weird masks. I think the point was that they were artificial weirdos and would do anything for attention/power. Eerily prescient.
True Chris, true. Its possible to change ones political opinions
(Hillary from Goldwater Girl to centrist Democrat, Reagan in the
opposite direction) but I get suspicious if they occoured in middle
age rather than in ones 20s, particularly right before an
election.
I've said it before and I'll say it again--Romney could've had the
nomination as a centrist, business-oriented Republican especially
given the state of the economy and his experience in that area.
Hillary from Goldwater Girl to centrist Democrat,
I don't believe she was ever a Goldwater Girl. She may have
pretended to be at the time, but then, as now, her entire focus is
on acquiring power for herself.
-jcr
That would make sense JCR except for the fact nobody, NOBODY who was looking for personal power would side with Goldwater in 64. Everyone knew he was going to lose big.
That would make sense JCR except for the fact nobody, NOBODY who

Everyone knew he was going to lose big.
It's not like the college kids canvassing for candidates
(alliteration alert) get much voice in the future administrations
if they win; I think it's entirely possible that she could have
been currying favor with someone, like for example her dad, where
whether Goldwater actually became president wasn't relevant. It's
not like Bill and Hillary didn't get anything for canvassing for
McGovern when it was his turn to lose spectacularly.
Maybe you're right.
I'd just like to think (delude myself?) that if she became
President there'd be just a little, teeny tiny bit of Goldwater
left in her.
What do you think, though, about Reagan's journey from New Deal Democrat to conservative Republican?
Forgive Arianna.
She sat in the front row as witness to GOP faggotry and the
"Hypocrite Monte" -- in the name of Michael Huffington - .....(aka
Larry Craig, Rick Santorum, Jim Tallent, Conrad Burns, Tom Foley,
the Rev. Ted Haggard, Saxby Chambliss, Tom Coburn, etc.)
The woman has needs.
Luckily, she found Bill Maher.
Isn't Bill Maher a little...uh...closeted himself? Or did you intend to suggest that?
I did notice he was hitting on that black (bi-racial?) conservative chick he always has on. AT least I hope thats the only reason he has her on, because I can only stand her with the "mute" button pressed.
Did you know that Maher dated Anne Coulter?
He does like the weed/drugs!
Maher claims to be a Libertarian - the GOP types hate him...
Go figure!
I like Maher. Liberty begins with personal liberty - taxes are here
to stay.
That is why I hate the GOP.
Maybe it's the accent but something always told me Arianna would have felt right at home in 1930's Germany.
...there'd be just a little, teeny tiny bit of Goldwater
left in her.
Just a useless vestigial bit, something like the appendix.
I thought she sounded like the fourth Gabor sister. Always liked her though, even when she was the conservative sometimes on Crossfire. I would have liked to hear a one-to-one debate between her and Arnold Schwarzenegger when they were running for Governor of California.
Every time Maher says hes a libertarian, baby Jesus
cries.
Why?
Maher is a populist libertarian. Why not enlarge the tent?
Sure, he is NOT anti-Social Security.
Why not start with BASIC personal/civil rights -- just to get past
2%?
I don't like the two parties either!
Admittedly - I hate the GOP though (can't say it enough)....
Maher claims to be a Libertarian - the GOP types hate
him...
Maher is no libertarian.
Plus he is sort of an idiot...i like how he decries modern medicine
as quackery (apparently Japanese people before western influences
lived to be 100's of years old) then claims Bush is Satan incarnate
for not federally funding stem cell research cuz of all the lives
it will save.
Maher is a Mike Gravel kind of libertarian.
Meaning, not a libertarian.
But you would vote for a party that would arrest Maher and myself
for banging sluts and X-ing all night?
Jesus fucking Christ.
then claims Bush is Satan incarnate for not federally
funding stem cell research cuz of all the lives it will
save
Another ChristFag rising in the form of a Bush apologist.
Maher is right. Freedom does not bow to your idiocracy.
Shrike, I'd vote for any Democrat that promises to keep his/her hands off my wallet and my gun. Funny how there aren't any like that in the Democratic People's Republic of California. [And for what it's worth, I hate the Repubs of this state just as much for being spineless fucking weasels.]
Another ChristFag rising in the form of a Bush
apologist.
Huh?
oh i remember you....your that idiot.
Here let me help you
Another AthiestFag rising in the form of a small government
apologist.
Joshua-
Go suck off your priest.
I am free. I own guns and love my wallet. I pleasure sluts and do
drugs.
I actually LIKE my liberty - you fucking slave to the GOP
types.
oh i remember you....your that idiot.
btw - it is "you're" that idiot.
You need middle school grammar - shit-for-brains.
Shrike did you get lost on your google search and end up here instead of Democrat Underground?
did you get lost on your google search and end up here
instead of Democrat Underground?
I am not a Dem.
I am against NHC, for example.
But I like the ACLU, the anti-war movement, secularism, science,
public schools, stem cell research, and union rights.
I am honest. I am against HUD, food stamps, farm subsidies, and
war.
Tell me. This little party is not good enough for me to beg
for.
oh and fuck the Christ faggots.
I will post with a vengeance!
"But I like the ACLU, the anti-war movement, secularism,
science, public schools, stem cell research, and union
rights."
Okay, listen. What matters is PROPERTY RIGHTS. That and the right
to take any drug you want.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say joshua corning doesn't support federally-funded stem cell research. But I might be wrong. You too, sound like a Bill Maher "libertarian".
Okay, listen. What matters is PROPERTY RIGHTS. That and the
right to take any drug you want.
Good enough!
joshua corning doesn't support federally-funded stem cell
research
the GOP tried to shut down ALL stem cell research based on the
'human cloning' ban.
Christ Faggotry - pure and simple.
I want to coin a phrase that is the OPPOSITE of WWJD....
Fuck them.
Take them head on.
They suck off priests. I have the high road.
YES!!!!!
Ok, d00d, you can be a convinced atheist and still respect the
personal, private beliefs of others.
Chris Potter is a devout Catholic, I'm a recovering Catholic. But I
still respect his right to believe in whatever he wants. And we're
both convinced libertarians and therefore agree 99% of the time on
politics.
He can go to mass on Sunday, and I can sleep in, smoke a bowl and
go eat a breakfast at City Dinner. And neither thing breaks anyones
leg or picks their pocket.
I have a problem with federally-funded stem cell research, but I certainly agree stem cell research itself should be legal. I didn't even see anyone arguing against that here. Hey, shrike, it's only Monday, lay off the sauce.
I don't think most people here like union rights. I might be wrong, but I think union rights clash with property rights.
Hey, shrike, it's only Monday, lay off the sauce....
reasonable request - if it were just confined to this site.
But the FoxNews/GOP types ATTACK us realists 24/7!!!
They take the 'WWJD' crap line to the extreme all day!
The SCIENCE guys are losing in some places to the Creationist
cretins!!!!!!
Its all in the debate! Who is stronger???
Kick the Bush rednecks ass!
"Soviet-style communism failed, not because it was intrinsically
evil but because it was flawed. It allowed too few people to usurp
too much power. Twenty-first century market-capitalism, American
style, will fail for the same reasons. Both are edifices
constructed by the human intelligence, undone by human
nature."
~Arundhati Roy
Its fucking nuts.
The 2% who call themselves "libertarians" can't agree on the
2%!
Fuck it!
I want freedom from Christ-faggotry!
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say joshua corning
doesn't support federally-funded stem cell research.
Bingo
What scientists do in privacy of their own privately funded
research labs is their own business.
Libertarian disclaimer #whatever:
As long as all parties entered into the agreement voluntarily.
"What scientists do in privacy of their own privately funded
research labs is their own business."
Life . . . I have created life!!!!
I love the Huff Post! Where else can you get crapp celebrity gossip and uninformed political commentary from imbeciles in Hollywood.
Hmm. The only thing I wonder is:
Is Ariana Huffington a has-been or a never-was?
I'm kind of inclined for "never-was". She might actually have
achieved "has-been" status by now if her Gay-American former
husband had actually won that Senate election.
Discuss.
I don't like Huffington, and I don't read the Huffington
Post.
That site is like a liberal version of right-wing blogs, like NRO.
Top down, inorganic, and way too much message coordination with
political campaigns. In its organization and operation, if not in
its politics, it's exactly the opposite of the real left-wing
blogosphere.
I remember watching the gubernatorial "debates" with the wide open field when they were recalling Davis. I watched Huffington give her opening statement and I was surprised by how little it sucked. Then, for the rest of the debate, she pretty much just regurgitated portions of her opening statement over and over again in response to every question, regardless of relevancy. I've thought as little as possible about her since.
real left-wing blogosphere
I am curious, joe, can you give an example of such a website?
Ali,
Off the top of my head: Kos, Eschaton, Ezra Klein, Balloon-Juice,
Glenn Greenwald (if you really, really enjoy scrolling), Matthew
Yglesias, Hullabaloo.
I do visit huffpost frequently, and do enjoy Salon and Greenwald from time to time. Kos and the like come across as Michelle Malkin of the left, not they are racist etc, but because there is a lot of empty rhetoric going on. But that's just me.
I want freedom from Christ-faggotry!
No one is forcing you to believe in Jesus, shrike, or to be a
faggot, so relax.
Using homophobic rhetoric to differentiate yourself from the religious right might not be the most effective strategy.
I am free. I own guns and love my wallet. I pleasure sluts
and do drugs.
Ooooh, and what lucky, lucky sluts and drugs they are.
Envy corrodes my soul.
Shrike,
We welcome you as long as you are in favor of the internationalism
of having bases in about 130 countries and the sound economical
policies of the Federal Reserve system. It would also be nice if
you agreed with the war in Iraq on principle(although we understand
if you think the execution was bungled). As long as you understand
these things and don't engage in ridiculous conspiracy theories
like the Tuskeegee testings delibertately killing innocent people,
USS Liberty attack by Israel or talk about the CIA then we love the
fact that you bang sluts and take X. All freedom starts with these
basics.
I want freedom from Christ-faggotry!
I want freedom from people like shrike making other folks think
atheism equals dickery.
Calm down, shrike. You type like you're narrating the antics of an
angry, over-caffeinated chihuahua.
joe,
I'm not sure that you can throw Greenwald into the left-wing. Most
of his stuff is anti-establishment, anti-Bush, but not necessarily
left-wing.
DDP,
Fair enough. I probably should have said "liberal blogosphere" or
"left blogosphere."
Whenever I see anyone taking Huffington seriously, I just
remember that she was married to a gay guy for years and
(apparently) didn't figure it out. Draw your own conclusions.
Of course, the very existence of Arianna is a tribute to the bounty
that our capitalist forefathers bequeathed to us. Such useless
twits could be considered a 'luxury item', I suppose.
The SCIENCE guys are losing in some places to the Creationist cretins!!!!!!
Isn't this a perfect argument for school choice? Why the hell do
you support public schools?
Did you know that Maher dated Anne Coulter?
Well, that explains the veiled reference to Maher screwing Coulter
during the zombie apocalypse in Max Brooks' novel "World War
Z."
1. Arianna Huffington got where she got on her looks and her
ex-husband's money. And that's not just envy talking.
2. The thought of Bill Maher having sex, with anyone, is
horrifically icky.
3. I wish I could write comments like Jennifer.
the GOP tried to shut down ALL stem cell research based on
the 'human cloning' ban.
Christ Faggotry - pure and simple.
The Christ Faggots are not the issue here, shrike. What I'm talking
about is pure research for research's sake, dude. Is it possible to
cross this line within the limitations of the technology as it -
also, dude, Christ Faggot is not the preferred nomenclature.
Hey, isn't this thread supposed to be about Ms Huffinton, not
about shrikes neuroses?
So let me get it back on track by saying that, regardless of her
political views, Arianna is a hot momma that I would totally
do.
