New at Reason

Playing now at reason.tv—reason Magazine Editor in Chief Matt Welch discusses super delegates, MTV and Charlton Heston on Foxs News Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld.

ed|4.9.08 @ 3:26PM|

That's it. My next pair of glasses are going to be cool Matt Welch glasses.
Half free-market intellectual, half John Flansburgh.

|4.9.08 @ 3:37PM|

So, can someone please explain to me what this Red Eye show is supposed to be?
Also, Reason - Why can't you guys get on a show that people actually watch?

ed|4.9.08 @ 3:40PM|

Baby steps, Moose. Baby steps.
It's all part of the DEVOlu...er...REvoLU...er
Forget it.

Holy cow!
is that what is really on TV now days? I really thought it was a fake show the first 30 seconds. That host is so incredibly annoying I had to stop after a few minutes.

As for the MTV psa, Matt Welch comes back to his pro-global war on terror days especially if it means sticking up for George Bush, more domestic spying, increased police state culture and gun confiscations.

thoreau|4.9.08 @ 3:48PM|

Why is everybody on that show so upset over the suggestion that tyranny could happen here too?

Granted, we're a long way from tyranny. The first signs would be a state that openly endorses torture, detention without trial, and indiscriminate spying on its citizens. Presumably that state would also send signals to the world by doing things like launching wars of aggression.

So we're totally not there yet.

|4.9.08 @ 3:48PM|

Reinmoose,
They have to prove to everyone that they will denounce anyone critical of the police state. Once they earn their fullfledged state worshiping cards they can get WSJ editorials or Sean and Hannity appearances.

|4.9.08 @ 3:52PM|

Thoreau,
If you are against torture and domestic spying databases then you are uneducated. Only morons who watch MTV would think martial law is bad, martial law is going to be good for you.

|4.9.08 @ 3:53PM|

"Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear--kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fevor--with the cry of grave national emergency. Always there has been some terrible evil at home or some monstrous foreign power that was going to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it."

General Douglas MacArthur--in 1957.

I guess MacArthur watched too much MTV. Too bad Matt Welch wasn't around to set him straight.

|4.9.08 @ 3:53PM|

Gabe Harris -
I'm afriad you're right to an extent. If you accept the coolness of the cool kids, they let you participate at recess.

thoreau|4.9.08 @ 3:54PM|

Cosmotarian Overlord-

I may be wrong, but I'm right to be wrong, and you are wrong to be right. And even after I'm shown to be wrong, it will still be true that you were wrong to be right.

I can haz job at the Atlantic?

Episiarch|4.9.08 @ 4:00PM|

I can haz job at the Atlantic?

You'll have to Thunderdome McArdle for her spot. $50 on Dr. T. He knows physics, all-important in the 'Dome!

You don't understand. It's like moving to New Hampshire. We get more and more and more Reason staffers to appear on a little TV show ... and eventually we take over and have an all-libertarian TV show that we can call our own!

Think of it as the Free TV Show Project.

Actually, I like Red Eye. I think it's funny, really. And they always have at least one really hot chick on.

thoreau|4.9.08 @ 4:14PM|

I can't beat up a girl, Episiarch.

It's not an ethical thing, I'm just not in shape.

Episiarch|4.9.08 @ 4:17PM|

It's not an ethical thing, I'm just not in shape.

Just use the chainsaw, then. You won't even be breathing hard.

Orange Line Special|4.9.08 @ 4:19PM|

Posting this online here is a good business decision by Reason, such to increase the number who've seen the episode by 50% or more.

thoreau|4.9.08 @ 4:28PM|

Lonewacko-

Do you think it would be a good idea for them to add Spanish subtitles? That might increase the viewership even more.

|4.9.08 @ 4:30PM|

I though Matt Welch was a long haired, ginger, pseudo-hippy.

What the heck is in the water at the LA Times? Does Cavanaugh now sport a tail and blue fur?

Bingo|4.9.08 @ 5:39PM|

I think Lonewacko might have Asperger's syndrome.

Why is everybody on that show so upset over the suggestion that tyranny could happen here too?

American Exceptionalism.

Things like war crimes, torture, aggressive and illegal wars, and the destruction of the rule of law are things that, by definition, don't happen to or in the United States. Those are principles which only apply to the dark, dank, wicked places -- not here. And when evidence of those things happening does rear it's ugly head, they don't reflect anything fundamentally wrong and evil with our government, because, as America, we're immune from anything like that ever happening. So even when conclusive evidence of those things emerges, there's no reason to pay attention to it. They're just isolated matters from the boring past, no reason to act as though there's anything deeply wrong here and certainly no reason to distract us from the vapid, petty chatter in which they wallow.

That's the impression I get from people who react that way to the suggestion that AMERICA could be tyrannical.

Also, what I posted above, most of the words were lifted from this Glenn Greenwald post. But I agree with it

Actually, I like Red Eye. I think it's funny, really. And they always have at least one really hot chick on.

Yay, someone besides me likes Red Eye!

Those that despise this show don't get the big dollop of self-irony it's served with. (I admit I didn't get it at first either after seeing a couple of brief clips.)

|4.9.08 @ 7:42PM|

I don't want to get accused of misunderstanding the real meaning of irony....so I'll just say the show sucked. Matt Welch came off as a facist and it would have been better if the host got hit by a cement truck.

I did think the girl was hot.

ed|4.9.08 @ 10:40PM|

Matt Welch came off as a facist

What...he's against...faces?

Kolohe|4.10.08 @ 1:13AM|

Best episode of red eye I've ever seen. (really!)

The only weakness was that the body language segment - a subject definitely worthy of the utmost ridicule - went ... on ... too ... long.

The halftime segment, always a high point of the show, Levy hit out of the park.

Danger Mouse|4.10.08 @ 1:26AM|

This guy is never seen in the same place together with Welch. Coincidence? I don't think so.

|4.10.08 @ 2:03AM|

WTF? is this a real show!?!?!?

After the fox news girl started saying weird stuff my brain almost melted!!! I think I'm gonna watch this SH*T!!

|4.10.08 @ 2:06AM|

also Patti ann browne!

|4.10.08 @ 9:52AM|

This might not be saying much, but Red Eye is the only show worth watching on Fox News. It can be really funny at 3am.

economist|4.10.08 @ 2:49PM|

I liked the segment about the parents voting for Obama to make their kids happy and the two fucking tw-er, lawyers- trying to sue because their neighbor fifty feet down the hall smokes. Personally, if I had some self-righteous little prick of a neighbor like that, I'd probably have kicked his ass long ago. God, I hate lawyers.
