Although not as common as powerful male monarchs, there have been powerful female monarchs in history. How did they dress?

Yeah, I know, their attire in paintings usually looks kind of goofy by modern standards, but (1) so does most male attire in those paintings, so I'm looking for comparisons with the men of their times and (2) I suspect that formal paintings by royally commissioned artists might show a different type of attire than they would wear in their day-to-day meetings with nobles, generals, merchants, etc.

Basically, I'm wondering how politically powerful women handled fashion questions in eras that were even more sexist than today.

OTOH, those women didn't have to please mass audiences, being hereditary queens rather than elected Presidents. Oh, wait, this is a Clinton we're talking about, in a country ruled by the son of a former ruler. I guess the notion of inherited power does apply here :)

A good piece by Ms. Howley. Certainly one advantage to being a male is that it's generally very easy to dress in such a way as for it to not be an issue.

At the same time, John Edwards has taken a lot of crap for getting an expensive haircut, which is something that women of means routinely indulge in. I guess there is a certain amount of equality to be found here.

My favorite female political figure was Margret Thatcher. I remember she wasn't much of a looker, but I've no idea how she dressed because I didn't care how she dressed. I cared about what she was saying, were she was leading her country, and wondering why such a smart woman held Ronnie in such high regard.

It's worth remembering that women were accepted as monarchs millennia before they were allowed to rise into the highest levels as traders - the latter being closer to the type of authority contemporary American politicians seek to demonstrate, as our culture is thoroughly bourge-fied.

I don't pay attention to anything Clinton wears. If THIS honestly made you a Clinton booster Howley then you're just supporting her because of a totally irrational surge of "girl power!" With that said she has been incredibly impressive in the debates and totally bitch slaps any and all challengers. She looks by far the most presidential of the democrats and will win the nomination easily barring a major screw up.

I don't know how she dressed. I'm a guy, I don't really recall the details of an outfit. And I was pretty young when she was in power and hence on the news.

I'm tempted to do comparisons with Benazir Bhutto and those two matriarchs of Bangladesh's political families, but I have a bug up my ass about dynasties. And I don't know how any of them dress either.

Who believes that the majority of our electorate cares about things like issues and policy? We're going to get what some of us deserve if we keep putting the wrong people in office. Clinton shouldn't be even in the running, let alone a potential nominee. Neither should Bush in 2000. Or Kerry in 2004. The list goes on and on. We don't have to vote for these people, and we sure shouldn't do so for reasons outside of politics.

Hillary has trouble with clothes because she's a dog. Yes, it's true. Most women in power are dogs. Nice clothes don't help that much.

There are plenty of ugly guys in politics, and notice the buzz always given to the "handsome" ones. I'm sure they have far less trouble with clothes too.

As more women (and therefore more attractive women) reach positions of power, the clothes issue will lessen considerably.

And while they're none too thrilled with Hildabeast, they are thoroughly tiered of NeoCon Republicans. Dukakis didn't lose because of the tank thing. He had all sorts of missteps and just didn't have any kind of compelling message or personality. Dole and Kerry were similarly unsuited as nominees. Bush, too. Though I think he won the first time around because he didn't come across as so poll-obsessed as the Clintons. We'll vote for even the illusion of principle, we're so hungry for it.

Vote for someone you at least kind of like, and vote for someone who you think wouldn't entirely suck in office. Democrats have a reasonably moderate option in Richardson. Republicans have Paul, and maybe one or two other candidates not named Giuliani or Romney. But, for the love of God, don't vote for some socialist or authoritarian because of their sex, race, looks, geographic origin, or because they were the Mayor of 9/11™.

I don't believe the Margaret Thatcher point is as pertinent as some commenters seem to think. Generally the PM is the leader of the majority in the house of commons. They aren't elected in national popularity contests like in the U.S. That Disraeli served as PM does not establish that the late 19th century British public wasn't biased against jews.

The examples mentioned above having to do with female monarchs are even less relevant. In the aristocratic era, there was a very clear set of conventions that governed the way dress communicated status and power. In our extremely egalitarian society, it is important to signal professionalism and authority while at the same time projecting that you are just one of the folks. The men's business suit does this perfectly. There simply is no female equivalent. Hence Hillary's problem.

Fair point about queens and the conventions of the past.

In regard to Thatcher, while she might not be directly elected, as the head of a party facing election she was still a public figure known to the voters. You can argue that her public appearances (in every aspect) were less important before she became PM, but in subsequent elections the British public was voting at least in part on whether they wanted to retain the PM. So it is probably reasonable to ask how she dressed when trying to appeal to the public yet project power.

I will admit that, while I voted for Gore over Bush, I remember watching candidate Gore discuss issues in the debates and thought "here is a guy with zero ability to sell himself to the American people" I was the fucking choir and I still would think "WTF is he rambling on about??"

As someone who leans Democratic, I think Obama wouldn't be too bad (I voted for him for Senate). Granted, he may not be libertarian enough for most people around these parts, but I certainly think he would suck -- and I believe he would be leaps and bounds better than Hillary or any of the current GOP frontrunners. I also think Dodd wouldn't suck. But he has as good a chance as Nader.

Frankly, I think the only reason that Hillary is a leading candidate for president is because she's a woman. As a modern politician, she's absolutely terrible by any measure.

Episiarch has it right. Physical attractiveness is a big factor in modern American politics, and Hillary would be probably be a shoe-in if she had the right look. Not bombshell looks, per se, but something on the order of the lead actress on Law & Order SVU, for instance. We experience politics almost entirely on TV now, and we don't much like looking at ugly faces on the ol' TeeVee.

Despite all the brouhaha over impeachment and the Slick Willie Jokes on late night TV, Clinton's job approval rating when he left office was rather high. Gore would have been better off talking about the continuation of the perceived positives of their administration of while laying the personal indiscretions at the feet of Clinton the Man.

I'm afraid that I believe he could have been a much better President than he has turned out to be.

I think where Bush totally melted down was actually going to war with Iraq. The sabre-rattling actually accomplished something; viz, getting Saddam to readmit the UN weapons inspectors. Even the French and the Canadians admitted that. Too bad he didn't take their advice and back off and see where the inspections went.

I'm not one to say we shpould kowtow to everything that the "international community" wants but to totally alienate two of our most solid allies was, well, just plain dumb.

I agree. And whoever told him to run that populist eat-the-rich campaign should've been shot.

It's possible to appear sympathetic to the masses without scaring other people into thinking you're going to tax them to death. Clinton was a master at it.

First, I have a question. Can you identify this venue?

Second, that's a non sequitur that wouldn't get cited if Gore had beaten the lightweight Bush.

Isaac raises a good point. While I didn't vote for Bush either time, I had some mild hope that he might be reasonably moderate. I feared his compassionate conservatism rhetoric, but I had no suspicions at all that we'd get what we got. 9/11 made a big difference, no doubt.

ChrisO's comment actually reminded me of an excellent place to look for examples of women's outfits that work well at projecting authority - female lawyers in movies and television, especially ones playing procescutors. If you're looking to convey character traits by costume, the entertainment industry is the place to look, and what you find there is a lot of dark colored-pantsuits.

I think Hillary's problem is that she's trying to use clothes to simultaneously appear authoritative and to try to make herself look more approachable to counter the perception of her as very calculating politician. If she wanted to simply project authority, she'd just need to go with a dark pantsuit (most female managers I've worked with go with this look and it's quite effective, IMO), which functions more or less equivalently to a dark suit on a male. You could go with a skirt and jacket for the same effect, but it's a little harder to pull off. Slacks or a skirt with a light-colored blouse work well for a more informal look, equivalent to a sweater or dress shirt with slacks for a guy. Never, ever go with a light colored pantsuit. Like the "business in the front, party in the back" approach of the mullet, the result of trying to combine two contradictory signals comes of as rather déclassé.

Note that most female politicians (and connected to politics) have usually gone for the standard suit (well, what else can they do?) and then go for the hair.

Examples: Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Maggie Thatcher. HRC, although she doesn't realize it, is getting closer and closer in her hairstyles to this.

What do people think about Yulia Timoshenko? She has a wonderful coronet of braids.

She's a very attractive woman, and I kinda dig the braids in a weird sort of way.

That said, they are not simply a fashion choice. Such braids are a very traditional and distinctively Ukrainian hairstyle, from what I've read, and they work as a cue to signal Tymoschenko's status as a staunch nationalist and also to counteract some of the glitz that goes along with her looks and expensive suits.
