This Saturday I'll be speaking in Charlottesville, Virginia, at a conference sponsored by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. It's called "Liberty, Community, and Place in the American Tradition"; here's a quick overview:
How have Americans' fundamental beliefs about liberty, community, and place shaped their way of life? This ISI conference will explore this question through a discussion of key American events, persons, and cultural moments. Join us on March 24 for stimulating discussions of the lessons to be learned--or unlearned--from Benjamin Franklin, the course of prairie populism, the later Thomas Jefferson, and the music of Bob Dylan, among other items on the agenda.
I'll be on a panel with former Reason staffer Bill Kauffman, occasional Reason contributor Dan McCarthy, and literary scholar Jason Peters.
The event will be held at the Boar's Head Inn, located at 200 Ednam Drive. According to ISI, "Seating is limited. For more information or to register, please visit the conference registration page, write frontporch@isi.org, or call (800) 526-7022."

Any discussion of Where Liberty Went Wrong in North
America may have to start with slavery, and Jefferson's inability
to take any action to put his theoretical opposition to it into
practice. TJ's Second Big Mistake was backing state-supported
educational institutions, like UVA.

Crap. Finally get an interesting event like this here, but my undergrad is playing in the NCAA hockey tournament this weekend. I'll probably be at the bar on Saturday instead.
I got a $15 (thereabouts) hamburger at the Boar's head once. Let's just say it was no double gus burger.

Serves you right for going on half-price night.
