New at Reason

Just in time for McCain's quasi-official announcement that he's running for president, Matt Welch explains in our April cover story why the senator from Arizona ought to make every libertarian's blood boil.

DAMN! I just got my copy yesterday. I haven't even opened it yet, and here's the cover story online for free. Cancel My Subscription!

Warren:

We do normally wait before making articles available online, in order to give subscribers the premium of early access.

But since McCain's all over the news, we thought it was important to get Matt's excellent piece out early.

I have to be honest - at this point I view my subscription mostly as a way of paying for my appreciation of the website anyway. It's actually a little frustrating when I get a few spare moments to read the magazine and the first three stories I try to read, I get a paragraph in and realize I've already read them.

On the flip side, this way I can read them at work. So, carry on.

Same here. I spend a LOT more time reading the website at work than I do sitting on the throne with the paper version...

Ditto to what Andy and Rhywun said. I hate to say that I wish the articles weren't published online, but there is nothing worse than sitting down with my favorite magazine, only to realize that I've already read well over half of the issue.

But seriously folks, much as I feared McCain in 2000 (and I'm still glad we got GW Bush), he looks so much better now in comparison to Giuliani! Even Hillary looks good in comparison to Giuliani.

[whisper voice]Uh Radley, don't you know "cancel my subscription!" is HitandRun speak for "Every body drink!"[/whisper voice]

Right (not that I don't take advantage of the best renewal rates). I've also started stockpiling back issues, as a sort of historical record. I'm kicking myself over not starting till after I threw away the "We Know Where You Live" issue.

Warren - Gunnels will be over shortly to beat you with Mona.

Jeez, he looks like he's got a monkey tail hanging out, and won't be able to get to the head for at least twenty minuts.

|3.2.07 @ 12:54PM|

Am I the only subscriber who still hasn't gotten this issue?

/end thinly veiled subscription bitch.

I just can't get past the whole contempt-for-the-Constitution thing affectionately known as McCain-Feingold.

|3.2.07 @ 12:58PM|

if you look at the site therealmccain.com he comes off as much more of a "flipfloper" then kerry ever was. just see the video of him weaseling around on the issue of gay marriage. it's disgusting. i can't believe i used to like this guy. that was a good long article by the way.

But since McCain's all over the news, we thought it was important to get Matt's excellent piece out early.

Good thinking. After all, he's not likely to do anything newsworthy again anytime soon.

Am I the only subscriber who still hasn't gotten this issue?

No, you're not. Add me to the bitching.

One of my favorite quotes from way back when was Dave Barry saying that the Keating Five were called the "Keating Five" because calling them "prostitutes with laywers" would be serious violation of libel law.

|3.2.07 @ 2:19PM|

McCain is a war hero and and surviving ex POW, 2 things which I greatly admire him for. However; I think it is possible that the time spent in a POW camp has had some effect on his mental stability. He would have to be superhuman for it to be otherwise. I can't see him as president.

|3.2.07 @ 2:19PM|

McCain's fatal flaw as a presidential candidate is that he's a hothead. Nobody wants an unstable person to be President.

Brian Sorgatz|3.2.07 @ 2:33PM|

McCain has worried me for years. He's a Greg Stillson.

|3.2.07 @ 2:41PM|

Hey, don't insult prostitutes, Jake!

|3.2.07 @ 2:46PM|

On McCain, I respect the biography, reject the personality and the policy.

|3.2.07 @ 2:47PM|

Is there a web site that lists all the officially announced candidates, including significant third party candidates?
(Please, don't all jump on me for writing "significant third party candidates.")

Timothy|3.2.07 @ 4:15PM|

Numero Seis: Is this a bad time to mention that I've gotten two?

Timothy|3.2.07 @ 4:16PM|

high number: my own regression modeling has found third party candidates to be insignificant at the 95% confidence level.

|3.2.07 @ 4:50PM|

i've heard both positive and negative things about teddy roosevelt from libertarians. c'mon guys how about a little solidarity? i need to know what to think about him. haha ;)

|3.2.07 @ 5:04PM|

Timothy-Clearly, you got my issue. Send it via FedEx overnight flying monkey within the next 38 seconds and no one gets sued.

Caroline|3.2.07 @ 8:42PM|

no issue here yet, either. *sob*.

just to buck the trend, though, i like my paper Reasons. i save them, and they're much more portable than my laptop.

I just can't get past the whole contempt-for-the-Constitution thing affectionately known as McCain-Feingold.

So, RC, do you support impeaching the guy who signed it into law?

|3.3.07 @ 4:13AM|

All y'all bitches bitching about not getting your issues yet. I got a subscription for reason a while ago. Primarily because like some of y'all I think of it of a sponsorship of H&R.

But I haven't seen an issue yet, and I don't know if they will ever get here.
