Michael C. Moynihan looks at the legacy of Dean Reed, every commies' favorite pop star.

Fascinating piece. I'm glad that Pete Seeger has finally come out as an anti-communist. I was always a big fan of Pete's, but I also remember him going to Hanoi during the Vietnam War and talking about how wonderful things were. Better late than never, surely.

I also have to quibble with Mike Moynihan's comment that Reed betrayed the "ideals of rock and roll." What ideals of rock and roll are there but fame, money, sex, and drugs?

Personally I believe it is okay to be anti-Communist as long as you are pro-communist. You can find the real libertarian communists at welcomehome.org and welcomehere.org

They will be landing in either Texas, Oklahoma or Arkansas for the purpose of enlightening the retards that got our nation-state into this bullshit in the first place. They went to Colorado last summer and someone outed Ted Haggert a few months later. If you take your Independence Day vacation with the rainbow family this year we can make it count extra positive. Leave your money at the front gate and make sure you carry your own weight. Luckily there is free air to breath and they usually have the food and water covered pretty well.

It would be best to bring your own herb to satisfy yourself and to share and trade instead of using bullshit currency from the racist police state.

*Looks at ABove Comment* Is this guy for real?!

Gaia|3.1.07 @ 9:40AM|

Yes, it is true. I have seen the circle of more than a thousand people using the human journalist organism "tros" with 15 grams of teonanacatl, that is psilocybin mushrooms, the flesh of God. This tool might have been given to me by outer space, but I am not sure because I can not remember before I was here.

It is there. There are many parasites and the Rainbow Family of Living Light are all nonviolent warriors because they carry the weight of the parasites and choose to go to the place where they are needed the most. They will be facing down the possibility of SECRET HALLIBURTON PRISIONS in this part of the country.

Just so you all know, they already build the concentration camps and we are all sitting around WAITING for them to turn on the ovens. Look at what they did to Jose Padilla. PCP and LSD make you officially insane and not fit to stand trial so you can't tell the wider world the HELL that you were put through. Please do not let this happen to the tros organism.

If you do I will be very disappointed and send more hurricanes. I am serious. OOGA BOOGA BOOGA.

[insane laughter ad infinitum]

I've been struggling with the whole "liberaltarian" thing, but . . . libertarian communists?

I guess tros just gave us an ad for "This is your brain on Marx", or something.

tros|3.1.07 @ 9:51AM|

It's okay stephen take another bong hit everything is going to be OKAY I PROMISE 8-)

tros|3.1.07 @ 9:53AM|

This is your brain on Marx

No, marx is teh lamez0r crypto-fascist. I tell people about the mushrooms because it gives them the real honest altruism not the fake collectivist kind. We can make a collective of autonomous individuals as long as they co-operate voluntarily.

I love some good 'ol substance abuse as much as anyone else, but TROS PUT DOWN THE BONG!!!

People, please get back to Dean Reed. I'd be surprised to hear Pete Seeger is "anti-Communist", he's probably as anti-Communist as Eric Hobsbawm. I remember hearing a lot about Dean Reed in East Germany, but he left absolutely no legacy in Russia as far as I can tell. It's funny Moynihan doesn't mention what everyone in the DDR "knew" to be true - Reed didn't kill himself, he was killed by the Stasi. Supposedly he'd had a change of heart after the violent reaction from family and friends to his "60 Minutes" interview and was getting ready to come back to the US and apologize. Naturally the East Germans/USSR were not prepared to permit such an embarassment and so "auf wiedersehen Genosse Reed". I suppose if this rumor were true someone would have discovered some clues in the Stasi files by now.

Didn't a movie based on this guy get made already starring Val Kilmer?

mediageek|3.1.07 @ 11:55AM|

LOL!

Great movie.

We can make a collective of autonomous individuals as long as they co-operate voluntarily.

I hope you didn't need the mushrooms to achieve that insight . . .

You might look into what has happened historically to these "collectives."

We can make a collective of autonomous individuals as long as they co-operate voluntarily.

Actually, if you replace the loaded word "collective" with "society" you pretty much have the libertarian philosophy.
