yet another example of why hippie/burner/boho leftists shouldn't be trusted.

Seriously though, great article.

So the pot heads and black panthers are actually doing something to help people while Bush and his Neo Con Men band of thieves in Washington are doing ...what? What about the Christian right hippocrites. Where is thier headquarters in New Orleans ?

So what if they make their own clothes? Charity and compassion never go out of style. I should think a Burning Man style economy would do real well in NO right now. Good luck to those volunteers, and the people they serve.

More ammo for me to use when I argue we don't need a government security net. The private sector does just fine.

Imagine where NOLA would be right now if 1) the goverment had simply done nothing and gotten out of the way completely, and 2) all those good private aid workers and donors had 20% higher incomes (due to much lower taxes).

A little googling will show you the light. Try various combinations of "Christian" "Baptist" "New Orleans" "relief" and "aid".

You might be surprised.

In an April interview with NPR, acting Red Cross Director Jack McGuire admitted the organization had made major mistakes after Katrina, including not reaching out to community groups that were doing some of the best work in the area. The organization promises to implement a "cultural shift" that includes working more closely with grassroots organizations, a tack the institution has historically shied away from. Kay Wilkins, CEO of Red Cross' Southeast Louisiana chapter, called Katrina "the great equalizer" of relief organizations. ..."I'll go to any meeting now," Wilkins says. "I work with groups I had never really worked with."

Government v private learning curve. Any predictions when we'll hear a FEMA official say this? Prior to hell freezing over?

The logic of the approach became clear to me after I spent weeks trying to get in touch with anyone at the New Orleans Department of Safety and Permits. I was hoping to get the department's reaction to Koné and other critics who called it inefficient and unresponsive to ordinary residents. No one ever returned my calls.

A case of "no answer is an answer."

I reasently moved away from NO and I saw more christain groups doing good works then counter-culture types (not to disparage the couter-culture types efferts) Almost everyone I know who need help gutting there home got help from pimple faced jesus frecks. You may dislike evangelical christains but they are generaly ernest and charitable.

It's not about counterculture vs. Christians. It's about private groups from all segments of society moving in and doing good where the government has totally failed.
