New at Reason (Expanded Edition)

manguward.jpgNewly minted Reason Associate Editor Katherine Mangu-Ward had a Jimmy Wales of a time at last weekend's Wikimania 2006, a confab dedicated to the controversial online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Read all about it here.

Katherine's official first day was yesterday (and a busy one it was, as readers of the Wiki piece can tell). Some quick background on her: A summer intern for Reason in 2000, Katherine went on to work for The Weekly Standard and The New York Times, where she was op-ed columnist John Tierney's research assistant. Along the way, she won a Phillips Foundation fellowship to look at the ways in which corporations were engaging in environmental concerns (part of her research saw print as this great February 2006 Reason story, "The Age of Corporate Environmentalism").

I'm very happy to welcome Katherine to the Reason staff. Or, more precisely, to welcome her back (read her previous Reason material here).

HAWT!

8.15.06 @ 3:36PM

So is Katherine the former Katherine Mangu who married some guy named Ward or is Mangu-Ward a formal last name? Or, maybe is Mangu her middle name?

8.15.06 @ 3:44PM

Congratulations!

8.15.06 @ 3:44PM

Congrats Katherine!

8.15.06 @ 3:57PM

Welcome aboard Katherine.

8.15.06 @ 3:59PM

Shouldn't there be a notice on all posts featuring pictures of female Reason staffers and blog commenters that people shouldn't make comments about how attractive they are?

Warren|8.15.06 @ 4:03PM|

Great article Katherine.
Congratulations on Associate Editor thing.
Now, about your used panties...OW! Hey!
All right. All right. I'm sorry. I'll stop posting now.
Ouch. Stop hitting me.

8.15.06 @ 4:08PM

You guys seem to have a good female/male mix. You should start a co-ed softball team or something.

The Server Squirrel|8.15.06 @ 4:50PM|

In honor of her arrival, I've decided to take a three-hour liquid lunch break today. Here's looking at you, Katherine!

Which one am I looking at, anyway? I see three of her.

The Wine Commonsewer|8.15.06 @ 4:53PM|

Wikipedia once tried to delete my cousin's bio because they claimed that being the Big Cheese at Mac Publishing wasn't important enough to warrant a Wikipedia entry.

They never tried to pull that crap on Gillespie. Good thing, too, him being Italian and from Jersey.

8.15.06 @ 4:59PM

We need to start a thread on which would be worth more: A thousand of her words or her cute picture?

The Wine Commonsewer|8.15.06 @ 5:01PM|

Oh, and Congrats to Kath.

The Wine Commonsewer|8.15.06 @ 5:03PM|

You guys have all of the subtlety of a Mack Truck and are living breathing proof that Men Are Such Pigs. :-)

8.15.06 @ 5:16PM

Katherine: welcome to the rumpus room. Grab a shoehorn and squeeze on in...

8.15.06 @ 5:25PM

The link to the Weekly Standard is wrong: it's not weeklystandard.org but weeklystadard.com

8.15.06 @ 5:25PM

Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy .... who's the new associate editor?

Welcome, Ms. Mangu-Ward.

8.15.06 @ 5:43PM

Does this mean that there will be a "Women of Reason" Playboy Issue this year?

8.15.06 @ 5:48PM

Oh god another fence sitting last name hyphenated women. Just pick a name will you please? Or just keep you last name, but do you have to insult your husbands entire family but butchering his name with that stupid hyphen?

I spit in your general direction.

8.15.06 @ 5:48PM

Nick, given that the H&R comment gallery is known to be full of perverts, posting her picture on H&R could be construed as creating a hostile work environment.

Katherine, if you want to sue, there are plenty of lawyers on these forums.

"Oh god another fence sitting last name hyphenated women. Just pick a name will you please? Or just keep you last name, but do you have to insult your husbands entire family but butchering his name with that stupid hyphen?"

Chris I asked that question above. I am not sure that that is a married name or a just strange last or middle name.

8.15.06 @ 6:02PM

the Weekly Standard? Really? She's a Neocon spy!

8.15.06 @ 6:11PM

Thoreau: Not many good lawyers I would venture to guess. Welcome to the new writer. Now write something so that we can all show how really goddam smart we internet losers are.

8.15.06 @ 6:42PM

Wow. Chris is really bitter.

8.15.06 @ 6:42PM

Her goof ball parents gave her a dash last name when it seemed cool. They did it to her sister, as well!

8.15.06 @ 8:57PM

wow, most of you are troglodytes and assholes.

8.15.06 @ 9:51PM

Welcome!

I actually stumbled onto a factoid that I was blissfully unaware of until recently. Mr. Wales and Wikimedia are based in St. Petersburg. The Florida version, of course. I wonder if they need an attorney? :)

8.15.06 @ 9:55PM

thoreau,
You're not drumming up business for yourself unless you got a law degree too. So why the suggestion? You don't like Nick's attire and want her to sue the leather off of him?
But I do agree with that bit about the pervs, me (and you) excluded, of course.

A hearty welcome to you Katherine Mangu-Ward. Looking forward to the next H&R happy evening.

"wow, most of you are troglodytes and assholes."

you forgot to tack "creepy" on there.

Wait until we start fantasizing about a Katherine Mangu-Ward / Kerry Howley / Smacky threesome before you start throwing stones, OK?

8.15.06 @ 10:21PM

Now where'd my asshole go?

8.15.06 @ 10:29PM

Now where'd my troglodyte go?

GOTTAFINDAWOMANGOTTAFINDAWOMAN...

RIGHT OOOOOOOOOOOOON...

HOT PANTS!!!

8.16.06 @ 1:08AM

Is this some kind of initiation ritual? All the guys get to make lewd comments for a day, then hopefully settle down and actually read what she has to say?

8.16.06 @ 4:17AM

I am starting to come to a point about wikipedia...

I have been playing with the idea that at wikipedia only the most fantatic prevail which is true but really not all that important becouse it is not selective so I have trashed it. Instead what I have come up is this:

It isn't that wikipedia is the place to go for all that is true...but simply that it is proving that there is no place for finding what is true...

and that makes everyone scared.
